Dem Talking Points: We're Screwed!
Dem Talking Points: We're Screwed!
Brian Beutler | January 20, 2010, 3:07PM

New Senate Democratic talking points, distributed in response to last night's special election in Massachusetts show the party pre-emptively placing the blame for a lackluster agenda moving forward on Republicans, who Dems say they now need to pass legislation.

"Republicans have an obligation to the American people to join us in governing our nation through these difficult times and to help clean up the mess they left behind," reads the memo obtained by TPMDC. "It is mathematically impossible for Democrats to pass legislation on our own. Senate Republicans to come to the table (sic) with ideas for improving our nation and not obstructionist tactics."

The new message also attacks Republicans for hypocrisy--for threatening to block Democratic attempts to address the country's fiscal situations after saddling it with soaring deficits under the previous administration.

You can read the entire memo below the fold.

1. "join us in governing" wow, what a chicken shit thing to say
the #1 job of repukes is to crush Obama and the Dems.

Stop being whiny little bitches and rule with your 57 vote majority, OR prepare to reap a permanent minority starting this November

2. There was no power sharing when it was 50-50 in the Senate...
...and Cheney had the tie-breaking vote. Tell the Rs to go fuck themselves.

3. Still pretending that Reconciliation doesn't exist - all you need is 51. No Repubs needed or wanted
Mathematically impossible, my ass.

Maybe, it's the DSCC that needs to start joining us in governing our nation. The Repubs can take a flying flug off a cliff.

6. Reconciliation ONLY applies to Budget matters and ONLY for that current Budget year.
Anything passed under reconciliation would expire at the end of the fiscal year and need to be reauthorized each and every year.. It is not the way to go on something of this magnitude.

11. You've been misinformed or worse. Here's how Reconciliation works:
A Bill passed by reconciliation sunsets after ten years.

The President of the Senate (VP) drafts an Instruction to reconcile the Senate Bill with the House. The instruction specifies the subject matter, the committees, and puts a deadline on the committee or committees which will report back to the Full Senate with an amended Bill. The Reconciled Bill can pass with 50 plus the tie-breaker cast by the VP.

The role of the Parliamentarian is advisory. The VP can ignore the Parliamentarian on issues such as the Byrd Amendment bar on non-budget related amendments. It takes 60 votes backing an objection to overturn the decision of the VP on relevance.

There's no reason we can't get a Bill the American people actually like by 50 plus one, quickly, if the White House knocks some heads in the Senate and the House plays ball, which I think they will.

The choice of Senate Committees is optional, and can be just one. It's a choice that is made by the person who writes the Instruction to the Reconciliation Order. That choice is made by the Chief Officer of the Senate, who is Biden.

Biden can pretty much craft the Bill he and Obama want in Reconciliation. It's up to them to compel the Senate and House to play team ball.

5. I can hear the gales of laughter from the Republicans all the way up here in Alaska.
Republicans had a strategy of stopping any and all Democratic proposals and they were/are successful. Does anyone actually they will change their strategy at this stage?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

In answer to your question though,
No.

9. It's the old Repub ball game
Play ball with me and I'll shove the bat right up your
ass. And too many Democratic Senators are willing to play
the game for fear they will have to upset either their
voters or their financiers if this ever comes to a vote.
True politicians "when bought, stay bought."

10. It's a cover for DLC'ers to be GOP light. They will cry about 'not having resources',
when in reality, the RW crap that will pass is what they wanted in the first place.

12. I'm afraid, you're right. We've been scammed and wasted the last six months.
We've also been repeatedly lied to about Reconciliation. It's much easier than they're making it out to be.
