So the apologist lately have been saying Republicans can pass legislation because

all they ever pass is tax cuts.

As if it is somehow accepted that Republicans routinely pass major legislation with as little as a single vote majority however understandable when the Democratic leadership can't do the same thing an 18 vote majority.

So what about:
Medicare part D, No Child Left Behind, massive expansion of pentagon funding (under all 3 Republican Presidencies and unrelated to war on terra), the failed SDI, and 20 years later the missile defense shield (SDI 2.0 just as useless, just as expensive), Central America Free Trade Act (CAFTA), NAFTA, Partial Birth Abortion ban, "Don't Ask Don't Tell", Defense of Marriage Act, Communication Decency Act, Digital Millennium Copyright Act, repeal of windfall profits tax on oil companies, expansion of AMT from ultra-rich to middle class (Tax "Reform" Act of 1986), bailout of Savings & Loans, funding 3 major wars, the "war on drugs". Plus active cuts in programs they don't favor such as cuts in welfare/disability eligibility and payments, reductions in Social Security payments, raising age of SS retirement, reductions in funding to EPA (reduced 28% under Reagan alone), Dept of Education, Student Aid, social services ....

That is just the major "accomplishments" in last 30 years. Add to that countless smaller legislation, pet projects, and pork barrel funding.
The Republicans have NEVER in last 90 years had a majority as large as Democrats have now.

Have you EVER heard a Republican on TV saying they can't do something because they don't have 60 votes. I sure haven't.

Stop making excuses for them.

51 is a majority. Republicans should be made to filibuster. Public opinion should be used to bludgeon Republicans into realizing there are consequences for opposing legislation (such as killing every bill a Senator proposes in committee).

1. Most stuff the GOP got passed under Bush was middle of the road stuff.
Both parties could find support for the bills Bush got passed.

2. The Republicans could pass legislation because of ineffectual moderate dems.
And Congress is far more partisan than it was even a couple of years ago.

Clinton passed DADT and everyone said it was the thing that destroyed his Political Capital. It happened before the 94 take over of Congress by Republicans. It was and is a tremendous step forward from what was in existance before Clinton..

5. So noted. The general point stands though.
Nobody blinks an eyelash when Republicans magically pass conservative legislation with as little as a single vote majority however we are suppose to believe Democratic leadership that they simply can not do anything without 60+ votes.
