Brain Size Tied To Video Game Success-gamers have better attention spans and perception
Brain Size Tied To Video Game Success
Structures In Brain Seem To Affect Learning Ability

The size of structures in your brain can predict how well you will do on a video game, according to a new study in the journal Cerebral Cortex.

A news release said the study shows that the striatum, tucked deep inside the brain, has a big effect on how much people can refine their motor skills and learn new things.

The researchers said that previous work showed gamers have better attention spans and perception than others. But they found that training novices did not improve their thinking.

They used MRI scans to measure various brain regions in 39 adults ages 18 to 28. They were people who played less than three hours of video games a week.

2. Their attention span for video games is good
Unfortunately that skill does not always transfer to other tasks requiring an adequate attention span.

4. Depends on the game.
Not all games are just twitch games that rely on reflexes. I play strategy games that take hours to finish a single objective.

5. No it depends on the setting and the activity
Having a good attention span for video games doesn't mean you have a good attention span for reading a book.

We have struggled with this in education for a couple decades now. As we acquire more technology for kids to use at school, we see a huge change in their ability to stay on task and stay focused. They are the video game generation and we need to recognize that and change the way we teach.

3. This reminds me of why
Solitaire and minefield were first distributed with Windows: many bosses weren't too quick to learn how to use a computer, and the games were included to help them learn hand to eye motor coordination. Now, it's moot on experience, because if you can't work out how to run a computer, you might as well call it quits.
