Muslim scholar Ramadan, once denied visa to teach at Notre Dame, now welcome
NEW YORK -- The State Department has cleared the way for the return to the United States of two prominent Muslim scholars once accused of having ties to terrorism, a spokesman said Wednesday.

One of the scholars, Tariq Ramadan, had been scheduled to join the University of Notre Dame faculty in 2004. Just before he was to start, the U.S. revoked his visa.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has signed orders enabling the re-entry of Ramadan, now of Oxford University in England, and Adam Habib, of the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, once they obtain required admittance documents, department spokesman Darby Holladay said.

Clinton "has chosen to exercise her exemption authority for the benefit of Tariq Ramadan and Adam Habib," Holladay said. "We'll let that action speak for itself."

1. "We'll let that action speak for itself"
In the midst of doom and gloom, and more Republican rejoicing over the return of the triumph of the politics of fear, this action is a natural-born shout. There are indeed some adults in charge somewhere.

2. both sides of mouth.
This guy speaks out of both sides of his mouth. if he wants to make an argument for the virtues of Islam fine. He has also espoused intolerance and backed the belief that Islam is the only true religion. You cannot have it both ways. Islam is a very conservative religion. maybe the times are changing were a conservative religion might be popular, but not by threat of bombings and killings. true religions bred intolerance. secular societies are having trouble filling the values void. Churches have to adapt to fill this need without driving people away with rules that are out of date.

3. His beliefs are not a legal basis to deny him entry to this country.
Good for the Obama administration for rolling back this repression.
