What did the Supreme Court just do to our democracy?
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 01:03 PM by BrklynLiberal
http://www.freespeechforpeople.org/

On January 21, 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations are entitled to spend unlimited funds in our elections.

The First Amendment was never intended to protect corporations.

This cannot stand. Sign up to protest this decision and protect our democracy! Free speech is for people — not corporations.

What's at stake

"American citizens have repeatedly amended the Constitution to defend democracy when the Supreme Court acts in collusion with democracy's enemies, whether they are slavemasters, states imposing poll taxes on voters, or the opponents of woman suffrage. Today, the Court has enthroned corporations, permitting them not only all kinds of special economic rights but now, amazingly, moving to grant them the same political rights as the people. This is a moment of high danger for democracy so we must act quickly to spell out in the Constitution what the people have always understood: that corporations do not enjoy the political and free speech rights that belong to the people of the United States."

- Professor Jamin Raskin, constitutional law expert at American University's Washington College of Law and Maryland state senator

The Plan

This campaign seeks to restore the First Amendment to its original purpose: to protect people, not corporations. To achieve this goal, we do the following:

1. Raise public awareness of corporate misuse of the First Amendment
2. Mobilize grassroots support to reclaim the First Amendment for the people
3. Create a legal environment for getting courts to return to the First Amendment's intended purpose
4. Work to amend the Constitution to make clear that corporations are not people entitled to free speech rights under the First Amendment

9. Frank Zappa had it right thirty years ago..
Nov. 1979 - quoted in Relix Magazine

The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre.

11. Go into any restaurant, any bowling alley, any high school
gymnasium during a basketball game and ask the people around you if they care.

Most won't and don't.

the long-term goal of the Reagan-led coalition against the working people included dumbing them down to the point that -- like the Romans' panem et circenses -- they don't know enough to care about anything beyond a constant, uninterrupted supply of a cheap 12-pack and the latest mindless entertainment.

Too many of us were too complacent and this is the result.

I honestly do not think there are enough of us left to make a difference now.

I wish I could disagree with you on this.
I really want to.
But...every day I open the Mobile newspaper to the Sound Off column and read some of the most idiotic,
illogical, ignorant remarks by perfectly "normal" people.
What the world needs is more of us and less of them, but the ratio is the opposite.
20 years..one generation...of dumbing down is all it took.

57. In the same court that issued the ruling?
You'd have to challenge it before the exact same judges, since there's no one higher to turn to.
I suppose it's possible, but so improbable that we're better off waiting for a meteor to hit them or some of them to retire and be replaced. (Which wouldn't work either. After this decision they'll be replaced by worse.)
I don't mean it to sound rude or be a downer, I'm just not really sure how to explain it. Of the five that voted for it, there isn't a single new argument that might sway them in any way. Fascism was pretty much their goal. :/

15. The same thing they did in Florida 2000
here is to hoping enough of the gang of shits that control the SCOTUS
have to step down that the rule of Constitutional Law returns to the
Supreme Court.

It also allows the minority party w/ their corporate backing to have the
heavy club in the 2010 election.

Allito, Roberts, Tony the Fixer, C. Thomas, and Anthony Kennedy are republicans first
and judges second.

38. You have to admit...
It puts a new, edgy spin on the Pepsi Challenge. Stupid and timid is correct... of course... who wouldn't rather tune in to a cage match (sponsored by Axe body spray) between Franken and Coleman to determine the winner? Recounts and run-offs are sooooooo 20th century.

25. Here's another site. "Move to Amend"

"We the corporations"

On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government.

Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions. The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law. In a democracy, the people rule.

We Move to Amend.

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend our Constitution to:

* Firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.
* Guarantee the right to vote and to participate, and to have our votes and participation count.
* Protect local communities, their economies, and democracies against illegitimate "preemption" actions by global, national, and state governments.

29. My Letter to Barack Obama (Slightly edited for anonymity)
Submitted to www.whitehouse.org at 09:05 AST on 21JAN10:

Dear Mr. President;

The 5-4 ruling today by the Supreme Court of the United States, in my opinion, is yet another example of a government that is a captive of special interests in America making decisions that harm the many by giving inequitable representation to the few.

I pledge to do everything in my power to fight this trend. I have already stopped all discretionary spending--no vacations, no durable goods, no purchases of new cars, no dining out or entertainment, et cetera. Instead, I'll be directing those financial resources to assisting in targeting any Democrat in nationwide primaries that I view as a non-progressive. If faced with yet another lesser-of-two-evils general election, I'll just sit it out, rather than give my vote to the less malignant of two tumors threatening to consume democracy. You and other Democrats have it completely within your power to keep or regain support from a growing number of disappointed Progressives like me. It's up to you.

In the interim, I've had my fill. You go fight your War on Terror, I'm stepping up my involvement in the War on Oligarchy. I will seek and use every opportunity to fight this war. I urge you and other Democrats to choose the correct side.

It goes without saying that much of my energy in this effort will be used to influence others to join this battle.

Regards

P.S.: That Massachusetts thing?--I hope you're paying attention. It isn't just Progressives giving up on the party.

Be specific.

37. It's simple. Justices of the Supreme Court may be impeached like any other Article III (Federal)
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 01:42 PM by Romulox
Judge:

US Constitution, Article III, Sec. 1:

The judicial power of the United States, shall be vested in one Supreme Court, and in such inferior courts as the Congress may from time to time
ordain and establish. The judges, both of the supreme and inferior courts, shall hold their offices during good behaviour, and shall, at stated times, receive for their services, a compensation, which shall not be diminished during their continuance in office.

The process is the normal one; the articles of impeachment are passed in the House (Article I Sec. 2) and the actual impeachment is tried in the Senate (Article I Sec. 3).

Hope this is specific enough for you. :hi:
