There was no limit to what we could have done
The whitehouse and supermajority in Congress.

For a year, we had a window where we could have accomplished -anything- Absolutely anything.

History will not looking kindly on this squandered opportunity.

We can still accomplish much change. But we could have done it all in 12 months. Now we'll have to slug it out and compromise for the next 7 years.

a pity.

1. Assuming we get 7 years.
Today's SC ruling practically guarantees the Dems will lose in '12 to the Corporapublicans.

2. You need to watch Rachel Maddow. There was never a supermajority for progressive reform.
She called it a "Magic Unicorn" belief that there was ever a voting 60 seat majority--unless you thought Joe Lieberman could be trusted to vote with the Democrat Caucus even when the insurance lobby blows it's super high frequency whistle that only their lap poodles can hear.

4. What chafes me the most about that is that they let him keep his seniority.
When he left the D party, he should have been busted in rank down to a new guy. I was against it the whole time, while some DU'ers were promising that we needed to do it so he would vote with us. Infuriating.

7. Rachel was right on.
That supermajority thing was an illusion that only existed on paper.

3. We could have flown to the moon
But look over there -- it's the Democratic "leadership" with its head in the sand getting anally raped by the GOP's dick.

Those stupid, miserable fucks.

5. It's the DLC, they look just like the GOP from a distance. It's a common error.

10. They are not the ones getting screwed. They will be quite comfortable
In their later years, as they reap the jobs and money that their sold out asses put us average folks on the line for.

They will do great, the common person not so well.

8. Yes in numbers only. Unlike the republicans, Democrats do not
march in lock step. Getting all democrats to agree on issues is like herding cats. I do think the best approach with big issues is small bites where there is general agreement. Them once those are done and you can show progress and accomplishnment you have leverage to move on the more diverse issues.

13. I keep on pointing out Republicans aren't actually fascists and they keep making it harder to argue.
There's always been a thread of conformity running thru American history, but it's still incredibly creepy to watch it in action.

9. Without any money, very little can change.

Yes, we could have done so much in those first twelve months.

We could have had Universal Single Payer Health Care.

We could have corrected the Economic Collapse by re-instituting the laws from the S & L crisis and thus set up allocating needed funds into regional, state chartered banks. With provisions that the monies HAD TO GO TO local businesses.

Instead, the monies have gone to Wall Street, and there the monies are just being shuffled around among the top players.

We could have revamped Glass Steagall at the same time as we handled the regional bank provisions.

We could have created a great many jobs by putting one hundred and sixty eight billion into the Fast transit, bullet trains program. (Contrast that with this - Obama put nine billion into such a program.)

But instead, that one hundred and sixty eight billion is going into finding Bin Laden in Pakistan or Afghanistan or wherever. (Congressional vote, Dec 2009 for expansion of Afghani war and continued presence in Iraq.)

So as the CNN Bailout Tracker continues to note the plunder, twenty three trillion and counting,
what monies will we use to revamp things? My piggy bank broke quite a while ago. And most here on DU have similar broken piggy banks.

It appears that the Obama Administration was very careful about looking the other way while all the money was given to the Banking Elite.

This is sorta like the freshman in college who gambles away the money saved for college. They can promise to study hard, but without any means of paying the tuition, what would it mean?

11. Sure there was a limit, we just ran into it.
At least in one way.

How many mega bills could you expect to pass in a year?

12. The Corporatists still have a supermajority, GOP + DLC. We still get screwed.
