Obama Did NOT Cut A Deal To Reduce Social Security Or Medicare. He Established A Commission. |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 07:57 PM by KittyWampus
Why some DU'ers insist on asserting otherwise as a statement of fact is beyond me. But doing so is not intellectually honest.
When you rely on intentionally inflammatory headlines or state something as a fact which has not actually happened, you are destroying the capacity for the Left to even fight for what we believe in.
If you don't want this Commission to consider cutting entitlements or whatever THEN STATE THAT. But don't assert that it's already been a done deed. It is not.

I honestly didn't know.
An 18 member panel will make recommendations on how to reduce the debt. They will be looking at entitlements and social services (and possibly recommending cuts to those programs). 15 of the 18 have to agree to make specific cuts to be recommended.
It could be bad, but it will be mostly Dems. It will need two repugs on to make changes. We'll see how it turns out. Hopefully, any cuts or reductions will be on the bureaucratic side and not on the side of those that depend on these services.

Will Congress be sold to the highest bidder this fall or later?
(I know, I know. It already is, but it will be more overt and with bigger bucks.)

20. Doesn't everyone? That is not synonymous with "cutting benefits." |
|
For that matter, you could even "deal with" it by, say, eliminating the Social Security payroll tax cap.

12. Is this another one of those "bipartisan commissions"? |
|
You know... like the Warren Commission. Or the 9/11 Commission?
If so, nothing good can come of it, just like nothing good came from those two jokes.

This commission is guaranteed an up or down vote on it's recommendations... which won't be revealed until AFTER the elections. No ammendments allowed.
Anyone with two brain cells to rub together ought to know what that means. Even if Obama hadn't just spent a year constructing an insurance handout bill and trying not to get his fingerprints on it, like a man building a ship in a bottle... it'd still be obvious. With his recent record, it's a blinking fucking neon sign.

17. Can't you agree something has to be done with SS and Medicare? |
|
They will have a Commission study it and make recommendations. Didn't they do it back in the Reagan years, something has to be done either they raise retirement age and or raise the contribution ceiling. I don't think it will affect anyone that is already receiving the benefits just future retires. Since Congress has totally f----d up any chance for health-care reform maybe our life expectancy will drop therefore that would cut costs. :sarcasm:

22. Yes. We should lower the age for Medicare and full Social Security benefits. |
|
End the tax cap on Social Security. That will take care of the funding for Social Security until the early part of next century.
And tax the rich and Wall Street transactions to boost Medicare funding.
