Are you mad as hell yet?
On a scale of 1-10; 10 being "blood pressure off the charts", how mad are you? I'm at 8, on my way to 9, probably be a firm 10 by summer. It's time for a 10 million person march on Washington, with pitchforks in hand, DEMANDING change.

Consider:

Failure of meaningful health care reform
High and relentless unemployment
Bailouts and obscene bonuses to banksters
Wall Street criminals running the Treasury and Fed
Congress bought and paid for by corporate America
SCOTUS decision that will complete the sale of Washington DC to corporate America
Property values and net worth of the middle class continuing to plummet
Devaluation of the dollar
Government statistics that are intentionally skewed to hide true unemployment and inflation figures

2. How many consecutive years are we expected to be "mad as hell"?
For me, it's already been about 7 years, ever since we invaded Iraq.
Some DUers have been "mad as hell" going back even farther.

Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 09:38 PM by Quantess
I was pretty upset at that too, but personally I didn't start getting boiling mad until early 2003.

The Supreme Court decision to appoint Bush president in 2000 was what inspired Skinner (and whoever else was a founder) to create Democratic Underground. Edit to add: In case you didn't know already!

I'm glad I can come to a place where I can vent about the direction this country is headed... without ignorant right-wingers adding their two cents. God knows I can't vent IRL here in Redneckistan.

36. There's a good reason that DU discussion boards are only for Dems and/or liberals.
We have enough to argue about amongst ourselves!
RWers are obnoxious more often than not, anyway (on discussion forums, especially, because that's when their socially repressed demons come flying out!)

24. I've been mad as hell since November 1972
When Nixon's dirty tricks got him re-elected. There've been a few bright moments since, but politics always return me to the mad as hell state.

How anybody can rationally blame the problems in this country on the "liberals" is beyond me. We have not had liberals in charge ever in my lifetime. Since Nixon, Democrats have held the White House for all of 13 years out of the last 37 years. And of those Democratic Presidents, Obama is the only one with a hint of "liberal" to him and he is not a Liberal.

So whose policies have destroyed this county? NOT the Liberals!

37. I think Carter was far more liberal than Obama is
Carter-- Supported the Equal Rights Amendment
Got a visionary energy policy going (that was promptly shit-canned by Reagan)
Didn't get us into any wars
Had an overall decent foreign policy which focused on human rights, eventually won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts
Set aside large areas of land for conservation
Tried to lead by example (walking the Inauguration route, keeping the thermostat low, installing solar panels at the White House)
Tried to get Detroit to make cars that were more fuel-efficient
Didn't sign on to anything that was blatantly unconstitutional like wiretapping

Sure, one can nitpick things about Carter, but overall I think he has been our most Liberal President since 1969.

39. By today's standards, yes
But back in the late 70s we thought that Georgia peanut farmer could not possibly be a liberal. I wish we had been more aware and supported him better because I am sure he is a good man who has tried to do the best for our country and for the world.

I always said of all the men who had been president in my lifetime, Carter was the only one I'd want to actually meet. The jury is still out on Obama - right now I would be too pissed to have a civil conversation with the man.

41. Yes, the jokes about the Georgia peanut farmer
and his comment about looking lustfully at women being akin to committing adultery didn't help his liberal image. And I myself thought that John Anderson, a former(?) Republican, was the most liberal Presidential candidate in 1980. But looking back on it, I think Anderson may have been just a stealth candidate who was in there merely to take some liberal votes away from Carter. I regret to say that I voted for Anderson. My only consolation is that, even if all of the Anderson votes in Arkansas had gone for Carter, Carter still would have lost the state by a wide margin.

45. I did vote for Carter - Mr. csziggy's brother campaigned for him
Rosalynn stayed at their mother's house on her first campaign trip through Florida. But I wasn't paying as much attention to politics in 1976-80 - last year of college, marriage and other things took up too much of my time.

Carter played the religion thing well, considering his Southern Baptist background and how he managed to keep a moderate image with such a liberal agenda.

26. I agree. There's a fresh new outrage around every corner.
For a few months I was in good spirits about politics, but the rose has faded.

I don't know what it will take for people to be truly outraged, hopping mad, wielding pitchforks and torches. Maybe never, if enough mind numbing sets in.

28. The flame that will set the torch on fire is millions
of unemployed people, particularly young males, who will be running out of options in the not too distant future.

Unemployment will be the catalyst, but shortly thereafter the unbridled greed, graft, and corruption of corporate America and our government will be the targets of unchecked public wrath.

No government can withstand that kind of social unrest.

I recommend the film Idiocracy. It's a comedy, but it's also bitter and scathing commentary, deep down. It came out in 2005 or so. My mom borrowed it from her local library after I asked her to watch it. :)

many who have now awaken, are only angry now because they now are feeling what many of us have been feeling for years.

We have always wanted our country back as we watched repugs taking away all of our rights. Many who thought they were comfortable didn't want to hear what was going on so now, they join a teaparty with the people who brought them this mess.

Too bad that they don't know that they are getting "fooled again" Dumbasses!

52. have been for a very long time
I collapsed under the weight of it a few years ago, quite literally. I took a long break, and now can only read a fraction of what I used to read. It just gets to be too much.... It is debilitating. The stress of actually living it is bad enough without reading the details.

Sometimes I think it *would* be better to let the wretched republicans win. Then the disappointments would be coming faster and harder and with any luck the spark of anger vs the corporations and banks and their collusion with the government will grow faster. What we get with dems is a kinder, gentler fascism... we are still headed down the same path only without quite so much violence. It would be horrible though, and please don't think I am advocating that, it just seems like we would hit rock bottom that much faster and get to start real rebuilding out of the destruction that much sooner.

60. I think acceptance, or perhaps acquiescence, is how
we got to the point we're currently at. I know it's hard to fight back; people are busy raising families, looking for work, working 12 hour days just to keep a job if they have one. Meanwhile, the politicians, banksters, and unethical corporate interests, now with the able assistance of the SCOTUS, are stealing the very country that we live in; that millions have fought and died for to protect, and they're doing it with absolutely no sense of shame or remorse.

At least until the dawn of Sharia law.
