"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"
"Nothing is over until WE decide it is!" -- Bluto, Animal House

We don't have to decide that everything is over just because the Supreme Court's majority sold out to the highest bidder.

We don't have to give up just because that centerfold twerp Brown won in Massachusetts.

We don't need to kiss democracy goodbye just because Air America goes broke.

I'm as shocked and furious as anyone else on DU about the latest blows. But please, let's remember that we have roofs over our heads, drinking water and food, unlike the people of Haiti. They're not giving up. We don't have to lie down and give up.

If President Obama and the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate keep kissing corporate butt and refusing to do anything for average Americans, then it's time we held their feet to the fire.

Congress could still do something to restore the Fairness Doctrine so that progressive voices would have their share of media air time.

Congress could still do something to revoke corporate personhood.

We can bitch and moan, but we can still press for these and other reforms. Maybe we need another Poor People's March on Washington like the one the Rev. Martin Luther King planned just before his tragic death in 1968. Maybe we need to show up and show them how fed up we are with corporatocracy.

"Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part." -- Otter

26. I'm too tired to do *any* jumping.
But, you have to admit, that is the tone of most things on DU anymore, and I saw one more person questioning the same thing that got others slapped.

Being for the underdog always, I spoke up.

Surely that makes sense to you.

On that note, have your movie discussion, and try to include ALL. OK?

So long to the Belushis and others....

ps.... as I was reading your post and writing this response, I was accosted by a crowd of sociopathic teenaged males of the same genre as the Belushis.... it *does* get tiring to more sensitive people....the same sensitive people who would like to see an outbreak of peace.

Silly old dodos, we are.

Edited on Fri Jan-22-10 01:27 PM by AlinPA
I watched Keith Olberman last night and his last words were: "Who is going to stop them?"
Certainly not congress. They are the ones who will be purchased.

It's up to us, but how? Help from other countries?

This ruling is enormous. When corporations can spend without limit on campaigns, unions' funds and raising money from individuals won't cut it.

16. Is it true the inspriration Bluto was none other than George W. Bush
It always seemed possible to me

A DU question from the past:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2471847

bear with me here, fans of fine cinema. For some years, it has been heavily conjectured, rumored and theorized that the John "Bluto" Blutarsky character in John Landis's Animal House, the Citizen Kane of fraternity comedies, was based in more than small part on the exploits of one Delta Kappa Epsilon brother at Yale University named George W. Bush.

These rumors are sure to be revived with the publication Monday in Newsweek of "Their Wars" an article comparing and contrasting the service of the former Texas governor and Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry.

Compare, if you will,

When Bush entered Yale in 1964, he joined Deke, the jock fraternity, and became rush chairman, handing out the nicknames and pounding down beers at "the longest bar on campus."

to one line of dialogue from Animal House:

"From now on, your Delta Tau Chi name is Weasel..."

And then there's this:

A favorite fighter-jock game was called Dead Bug. In a bar, when anyone shouted "Dead bug!" everyone, including generals, had to drop to the floor with hands and feet extended into the air, like a dead bug. Last man down had to buy drinks.

One word should come to mind for connoisseurs of fine American cinema:
"GATOOOOOR!"

Discuss amongst yourselves...

and

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/matt-littman/what-president-bush-learn_b_55349.html

George W. Bush is what would have happened if Senator Blutarsky became president.

These two men had much in common, even in college. What do I mean? Well, who was "was elected president of his fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon, which was known as the hardest drinking jock house on campus." According to The Washington Post, that was George Bush. As we know, Bluto was also a member of the Delta House, but at mythical Faber College.

It appears that President Bush was the real life Bluto, and that explains why he respected Bluto so much that he followed in the fictional senator's footsteps. Let me cite several examples as to how George W. Bush took his cues on leadership from Bluto Blutarsky:

In the movie, Bluto showed his knowledge of history when he asks, "Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

While George Bush was president, the United States was attacked by terrorists, mostly from Saudi Arabia, and under the orders of a terrorist living in Afghanistan. The U.S. then attacked... Iraq -- the equivalent of attacking Germany after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

In the movie, Bluto used his imagination to declare himself, implausibly, a zit!

As President, Bush used to declare himself, implausibly, a fighter pilot!

48. Here's the full exchange from the movie. BTW, lighten up. It's a joke and a cultural reference.
D-Day: War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...

Bluto: the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!

Bluto: What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer...
Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.
D-Day: Let's do it.
Bluto: *Let’s do it*

Eleven months to fight back whichever way we can, before the corporations buy themselves a new Congress -- IF we let them.

What can we achieve in 11 months?

35. This very same movie line was used in a thread quite recently, and
in that one also there were several corrections offered, even though after each one the explanation was made that it came from the movie "Animal House."

In both of these threads, based on the way the corrections are spaced, one might think that folks read the OP, and jump right in to offer to fix what they see as an error - without reading any of the responses.

Or, they don't know references from outstanding movies.

It was this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=7532471

38. It means younger people are on DU
and that, ultimately, is a very good thing.

Even though I'm a member of the baby boom generation, I don't want DU to be the exclusive province of people my own age, or aof ny other age group. It's wonderful that DU has members in high school and college, all the way up to people in their 70s and beyond.

I don't get all the references to contemporary films and music, and the younger folks generally aren't familiar with old movies like Animal House, but we all learn from one another.

that some folks in General Discussion will argue about anything under the sun ... even quotes from Animal House.

I like your suggestion.

Maybe the mods and/or Skinner could post something about civility toward one another on DU and step up the enforcement.

Or maybe we all need to put our heads down on our desks and take a little nap time like kids do in preschool when the tots get cranky. ;)
