Keith Olbermann Appreciation Thread |
|
Keith Olbermann was brilliant last night. I liked the way he gave us a bit of a history lesson alongside the commentary while the Supreme Court ruling on the death of our democracy,(basically)was still fresh.
It was nice to have some straight talk and good company and hand holding at the wake of what was formerly known as the United States of America. Apparently it is now the United States of Corporations.
I was certain he would be fired for calling them bastards on the air, but I'm glad he's still with us. We need him now more than ever.
KEITH WE LOVE YOU!

I love both Stewart and Olbermann and I agree that sometimes K.O. unleashes a little too vehemently in a way that detracts from his genuine targets. If he's frothing at the mouth at everything, his rage is less effective when it really counts.
But I'm also getting a little tired of J.S. going after cheap media targets and what stupid know-nothing made what ignorant comment this week. Did he really need to spend 1/3 of a show telling Olbermann to tone it down a little? It would have been a lot more constructive and respectful to keep disagreements behind the scenes and go after some of the hundreds of people who are doing real, palpable harm even as we speak.

If there's one thing we learned from Ben Affleck, it's how to do a Keith parody right. Jon didn't even do a good parody. Keith doesn't change glasses, he doesn't do that hand gesture Jon kept doing.
I saw Ben Affleck...I laughed at Ben Affleck...you, sir, are no Ben Affleck! :)

Keith's been saying things like this for YEARS, so why does it bother Jon now, all of a sudden? I mean, one of the examples Jon cited was from about three years ago. Keith's "WTF" segment on Rush Limbaugh was infinitely nastier, but you didn't hear Jon complaining then.
I hope Keith doesn't stop using this sort of scathing humor against the RW'ers, just because Jon doesn't have a sense of humor about it. Keith is fantastic just the way he is, which is why Countdown's the top-rated show on MSNBC. :)

., I think Jon maybe felt he HAD to roast Keith a bit. Since he rakes the other "journalists" over the coals on a regular basis, he gets a bit more "fair and balanced" creds if he goes after Keith and the like. Let's face it, for all the hollering and silliness, he really WAS sorta easy on Keith. Witness also that Keith had fun with it. Like Beck or Billo would respond as Keith did! Of course, Jon (and Keith's) portrayals of Faux Gnus luminaries is documentary stuff that just happens to cause laughing!

That's how Jon operates - telling the truth (as he sees it) humorously.
He went as far as to show quotations of Keith saying other outrageous things and talked about how much it detracts from his power.
And in saying "that's my job" - Jon is a comedian, Keith is a newsman.

Give me a break. He's as opinionated as Rush Limbaugh. Therefore he is no newsman. I watch him because he is entertaining, but he is no Brian Williams or Walter Cronkite. You're supposed to at least pretend you're unbiased in the news. Olbermann is smart, he knows when he goes off and gets more obnoxious he gets better ratings. He has to earn his $7.5 million salary somehow.

No, he's not... Keith Olberman is more like the Edward R Murrow of our times... always looking for interesting and new ways to get Americans engaged in their government while bowing to, or having to nod to the contemporaries in "the news". Both, in my view represent the change agents of how Americans evaluate their government.
Of course, you'd have to be observant to weigh in on that.

Keith and Rachel are the only ones I really trust to be straight with me. If they say something wrong, they correct it. And more often than not, both express my feelings pretty well, so it's safe to say they're on the same page I am most of the time.
MSNBC would never be on in my home were it not for the two of them. I like Dylan and Ed as well, they both really get worked up.
Can't stand slobber boy, Chris Matthews. HE WON'T SHUT THE HELL UP! He likes hearing himself talk. He's rude to guests on his show because he won't let them answer questions.
Repuke Pat Buchannon is a bigot loud mouth wheezer. He just needs to go. Faux will take him, I'm sure.
Joey is a real piece of work, and Mika is his little blonde doll. She does what he wants her to do.
Keith and Rachel are the best.

KO has the intelligence and decency to call out repug evil. that's all repugs are. they are denying healthcare to the needy. how can all the repug senators be against a bill that has already been watered down to win their support. as per this example, why bother trying to work with repugs. they are useless, and will not work with us. we need to win the votes and work with the majority of American voters who are decent and hard working people.

Jon Stewarts mock "special comment" to Keith last night, while funny, was also completely true in my opinion.
Keith has so much talent, and special comments like the one he gave on the supreme court are powerful, but he continues to descend further and further into Rush-Limbaugh style bombast and he somehow things its all ok because "he's right" therefore anything goes.
I'm sorry but when I watch Keith's show today and he's calling people "fat asses" or women "pathetic lumps of meat" (I don't care what the woman's politics are) I don't see anything resembling his supposed "mentor" Edward R. Murrow.
Please, Keith - get back to journalism, or if not journalism, at least civil, insightful commentary and analysis, not name-calling and insults that are frequently bigoted and sexists ... and that doesn't suddenly become right because your bigoted or sexist insults are directed at bad people.

56. The King of the MSNBC primetime of hard-hitting, worthy news. |
|
Although PBS might've pulled Bill Moyers, Olbermann will at least be some intellinfotainment for another time being, until Comcast swallows up NBC and replaces the S on MSNBC with a dollar sign. Keith-O breaks down current politics and other events and pwns the rival Fox News primetime of brain-melting propaganda. Unlike the idiocy of the Fox talking skulls, Olbermann's commentary appeals more to facts than to emotion. If there is appeal to emotion, at least it's a bit mature.
Oh, and now time for my personal "appeal to emotion":
O8) :toast:  :kick: :loveya:
PS: Right now I'm listening to Keith's Special Comment re: Citizens United v. FEC on MSNBC.com. Some solid stuff.

He is retiring. He is pushing 76 years old, and well-deserving of some time to himself.

and has probably put himself in danger by being vocal and truthful about whats going on. It takes courage to do what he does when he is well aware of the dangers. At least he is not a coward like so many in the main stream media and is willing to speak truth to power.

75. Well, I MISSED The Whole Thing... I've Had To Cut Back From Listening |
|
to MSM because it's just become TOO STRESSFUL! We listen to all that is happening around us, and we keep listening, and then I go to bed at night and CAN'T sleep!
As a very long time activist it's taking a LOT to stay away, and I wasn't going to check in at DU because of the very same thing! But here I am, with a caveat... I wanted to see what kind of reaction there was to "The Supremes!"
So if Keithie called them BASTARDS... THEN good on him!! Most are, and I'm sick of them telling me things are "getting better" when I see NOTHING like it! A friend of mine told me that the SOUTHWEST unemployment rate has grown bigger than expected and either I get a grip or my husband may just want to get up and leave because I'm ALWAYS talking POLITICS and how it's affecting us! And now, because of unemployment Union membership is down to 7.5%!! How far we've fallen!!
I've always said I wanted to keep in touch with all that's going on, but now I'm thinking it's best just to "hang on" to what we have and because the price of food is going up, it will be back to trying to maintain a garden down here in Florida! Need to hone up on the "pests" again because that is such a HUGE problem down here! As soon as my tomatoes started turning a little red, the birds and bugs took over!
Anywho, GOOD on Keith and I don't care what he called them, or our Congress Critters OR the WH! I'm just fed up and while I may still "keep watch" I KNOW I'll have to cut back! Not a dime from me, and I can't volunteer or help like I have always done! NOTHING is turning around and YES... you can call me a LOSER and a QUITTER! It is what it is!!
Good thing the Australian Open is on right now... love me some tennis!!
JMHO!

76. Now let's see, what happened this week? Jon Stewart "lampooned".. |
|
....K Olberman, the Supreme court declared an end of Democracy as we have known it in the US, a RW (unknown) nut won Ted Kennedy's Senate seat by a wide margin IN MASSACHUSETTS yet. AND, "some" people here are going to slam Jon Stewart for his funny satire of Olberman's (slightly) over the top critique of Brown. I swear to fucking god, it gets better and better at DU by the fucking day. I hate the term "circular firing squad", but I think it applies here.
Monday: I hate Jon Stewart!!!
Tuesday: I hate Dennis Kucinich!!!
Wednesday: I love Jon Stewart (again)!!
Thursday: (keith Olberman takes the day off) I hate Keith Olberman!!!!
It's not even funny, it's pathetic. THIS IS WHY LIBERALS LOSE.

He reverted back to his old "centrist" repuke ways when he used MSNBC airtime to bash an actual Liberal, Mike Malloy.
I'm sure Schultz is still pissed that he got booed off stage for attacking Malloy years ago at a town meeting in Seattle, but he should have kept that shit to himself and not used his "psycho talk" segment to bash someone who speaks the truth daily.

111. I agree with you on Mike Malloy... |
|
as I have the HIGHEST regard for him despoite what ANYBODY say about him but you cite only ONE instance against Schultz. That is NOT enough to convince me he is unworthy as a liberal and anti-GOP score-settler.
I think Chris Matthews is more idiotic at times. Just a couple of nites ago I saw him take Alan Grayson to the woodshed. Sometimes its hard to know where Matthews is coming from. Not so with Schultz.
Besides The GOP's hit list lists Reid as #1, Pelosi #2, the DLC? as #3 and Schultz as #4. That ought to shoot down your dislike for Schultz. He considers it a badge of honor. How can you disagree with that?

If jon Stewart thinks there is equivalence between the crazies of FAUX News and Keith Olbermann, then he is no longer worthy of a watch. I am going to stop DVRing him (he gives away far too many shows to GOP tools anyway).

I loved it when he names Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly for various Worst Persons honors.
He's a stark Bush critic and also criticize Obama for his irresponsibility for the first year and his escalation in Afghanistan.
My only complaint that he only takes to military experts rather than Anti-War activists (civilian) on foreign policy issues. He should re-invite Cindy Sheenan if he has the time.
His hour-long Special Comment is his most personal when he mentions his ailing father on this.
He has some flaws, but other than that, he is a good news anchor and I commend him for his bravery against the Bush administration and his stance on the Iraq war (occupation).

112. Keith is the voice of reason |
|
His special comments have become his trademark and a book. For Jon, trying to belittle him because of a little hyperbole is only worthy of Jons huge failure as MC of academy awards. I can't stand the guys angry humor, does he ever smile? I'm glad he is on off off cable, like off off broadway. Maybe he is looking to use his critique of Keith get attention for another spot somewhere. I'm glad Keith didn't take the bait and resisted calling him names and further this farce. Jon is NOTHING without his writers as we seen in his academy awards performance. Keith, on the other hand, does his own material with, intelligence, wit, humor and deep sincerity. I miss him when he is gone;, but I also like Lawrence O'Donnell very much; he is very knowlegeble on govt policy and political matters. I would like him to get Chris' 7pm slot, he belongs in Keith, Rachel line up. I wish they would improve day time lineup Andrea is only one, I listen to. Get rid of motor mouth in 3 to 5 spot. Weekend needs lots of more political programing to compete with Fox.
Keith keep up the good work, it is more than appreciated and ignore the; stupid, envious, humourless, witless comments. Just stay that special commentator, we need.
