This is why I don't like the Greek scene (frats and sororities) on college campuses |
|
OK, they are not all that way, but most of them are, especially the traditionally white, social Greek organizations: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/22/sorority-sisters-fashion_n_433491.html

19. Yeah. This was back in 1991-2 when he had Barry Crimmins writing all his jokes .... |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-22-10 09:18 PM by slampoet
....for his late night show in FOX.
That show was one of the best things ever on television. Hell it even had a reading list so you could get the next night's obscure jokes if you read the right books.
Too bad Dennis Miller has shamed the memory of that show with his more recent whoring around.
BTW - Last i heard Barry Crimmins was writing for RANDI RHODES!!

if you can find a frat that fits your personality, etc. then you can rush, and if not - you don't
i think they are great.
many org's have dress codes. heck, mine requires a very specific uniform.

Seriously? That's what you have to say? What a fucking joke.
Clearly, you know what happens at EVERY frat party. And, apparently, bad things don't happen at other parties?

9. That doesn't look like an every day dress code but like something for "Rush" |
|
when people are joining sororities. It wasn't my thing when I was in college, but to be honest, if I *were* trying to get into a sorority, I probably would have appreciated such explicit guidelines. Because, you know, people are going to judge you by what you wear ANYWAY -- at least in that arena -- wouldn't it be better to know expectations ahead of time and avoid them judging you behind your back?

17. Yes, it does seem to be the dress code for "Rush" (or "Recruitment " as it is now called) |
|
I was in a sorority and yes we had a dress code for recruitment. It is about making a good impression just like at a job fair or an industry conference.

I had all sorts of fun tormenting one particularly loathsome herd of frat rats when I was in college. I befriended some engineering students who made it their hobby. Basically we were agent provocateurs.
Their specialty was putting cars in empty swimming pools with a system of jacks.
But I still scratch my head when I see somebody put their fraternity prominently on their resume,
I had no interest in joining a fraternity, but I was approached by a couple - one even said if I joined I would be the first jew they accepted anywhere.

12. March like lemmings and do as I say. |
|
Fraternities throw good parties because that is why they exist. They also exist to give people of like minds companionship so they can look down on other people together. I've been to many frat parties and played many as a musician. One thing I have noticed is the prevalent racism. Being a different color will exclude you from a fraternity. I can name several major universities where this is true even today.
I'm watching the Haiti Telethon while typing this. How many frats do you think will donate as a group?

21. I had no interest in a sorority. Or in frat boys. |
|
I went to a rush party at a sorority and some Muffy came up to me and gushed, "You meet such nice people at these parties!".
My first thought: 1) No intelligent life here; 2)No boys, so I'm outta here.....
This was at a small private school that did not have national sororities and fraternities, but they still had to do stupid stuff, like go to your classes with a notebook and get all your sorority sisters to sign their names in your notebook. :wtf:
The sociology prof who was the token liberal on the faculty, who most of the preppies hated, once said to a class, "You know, some of the stupid things you frat boys do during rush make me wanna PUKE!!".
Bravo, Professor O Z White!!! Student of Talcott Parsons. (Yes that's O Z with no periods)
When I went to the University of Houston I lived in a high rise dorm. I was waiting for the elevator and about 10 or 15 black girls came in the lobby, all dressed in identical pink pantsuits and singing a song, in single file. I think it was Alpha Kappa Alpha perhaps.
Anyway, I thought, "WHY IN THE HELL would ANYBODY want to be exactly like somebody else?".
I know, my parents were liberal Democrats.

24. You don't like them because they have a dress code for what |
|
appears to be for rush?
I was in a fraternity (president of it for 2 years). I gained as much if not more of an education in the fraternity as I did in any classroom in college.
It was basically like running a small business. We owned property. We had to budget. We had to track expenses. We had to collect money and raise money. We managed events. We gave to charity more than any other organization on campus. As much as you may like to think that a fraternity meeting was just all about drinking and getting stoned, our weekly meetings (not to be confused with our parties) we all business. At any given time we would have 20 to 40K in our bank account. In the business world today I lean much more on the skills that I first developed in the fraternity as compared to what I learned in class.
- No we weren't a bunch of klansmen - No I didn't "buy" my friends - No we didn't all think a like - No we didn't always dress a like

27. Very interesting from a sociological perspective: Class training and an automatic network... |
|
... can be yours if you have the money for the wardrobe and the inclination to conform. And I guess, if you are conventionally pretty as well -- see their skin care tips.
When I went off to college my mom was so hostile to the entire idea of fraternities and sororities I wouldn't have dared try even if I'd had the money. She went to college as an academic scholarship student from a poor family, defying her father who thought girls didn't "need" to go to college anyway. With that kind of background, she naturally thought the girls and boys in the Greek system were airhead slackers. Not said but a definite subtext: they had an unfair advantage because of money and class. Also not stated in so many words, but understood in my family: we valued nonconformity.
Fast forward through my life, a mixed bag of info about frats: they make the news every fall because they always lose a few pledges to alcohol poisoning and rough hazing. That's just wrong. On the other hand, nearly every man in a position of power in this country was a fraternity member in college. Something to think about, if power is what you want or what you want for your kid.
Sororities don't seem to go for fatal initiations, so it wasn't until I met a few sorors in midlife that I had something new to think about. These were successful businesswomen who networked and mentored, and their old sorority ties were a national networking system for them. Who knew. I was suitably impressed.
So I guess the take-away for me was this: You don't learn everything in a classroom, even if some of what you do outside seems (or is) really silly. It's what you make of it.

28. Ex Sorority Girl Here |
|
Thank you for being open-minded. I was from a college where Greeks weren't a big deal, so there was none of that Animal House, WASP stuff. I swore I'd never join one. Needless no say, never say never. Went to a party my third day at school, met some girls I liked, joined a sorority. Fought the BS the whole time, refused to take part in hazing in any capacity. Got out of school, went to work. Discovered that the ex-Greeks I ran into in the workplace early in my career tended (I said TENDED, to work and play a bit better with others when working in groups. Could only surmise that it was because they had come into the workplace with a bit more practice. Now I'm older, the world is a meaner place, and everybody hates everybody at work. Several of my sorority sisters are still my best friends 30 years later. Yep, it is what you make it.

:eyes:
I loved what Garry Trudeau had to say about W, years ago. They'd both gone to prep schools; when W showed up in the dorms, Trudeau said, "I knew the type." There was a very long interview in, I believe, Rolling Stone.
Clearly, Trudeau decided on a different worldview.
