Earthquake survivors get solar-powered bibles
AS international aid agencies rush food, water and medicine to Haiti's earthquake victims, a US faith-based group is sending Bibles to Haitians in their hour of need.

Not just any Bible.

These are solar-powered audible Bibles that can broadcast the holy scriptures in Haitian Creole to 300 people at a time.

Called the "Proclaimer," the audio Bible delivers "digital quality" and is designed for "poor and illiterate people", the Faith Comes By Hearing group said.

According to their website, the Proclaimer is "self-powered and can play the Bible in the jungle, desert or ... even on the moon!"

The Albuquerque-based organisation said 600 of the devices were already on their way to Haiti.

8. Who Says They're Not Getting That...
Even better...maybe there's a black market for selling those things...sell the bibles for food and water.

I would think that someone handing out a bible to starving or thirsty people would get the crap knocked out of them.

21. How much do you figure these bibles cost?
I'd rather see these folks spend that money on food and water. But that's just me.

26. Black Markets Create Their Own Value...
Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 10:17 AM by KharmaTrain
Surely the solar cells or wiring have some value...in a society in total breakdown the simplest things have the greatest value. The other night I saw a report on the BBC about young boys who rummage through the debris for anything of value they take to the "Steel Market" and trade for sugar cane. These people have always had to be resourceful to get by.

Also on the religious side...the city's main cathedral is in ruins as are other churches around the country. While we may agree that religious groups could be exploiting the situation, this is a very religious country and if those bibles bring some comfort, it's a little port in the storm.

36. They are Catholic
I was raised Catholic. The only parts of the bible we ever talked about were Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

If this group that sent the bibles was really concerned about providing religious comfort to the Haitians, they would have sent rosaries.

39. Most are Catholic, some are Protestant, and your anecdotal experience is just that
I seriously doubt if the persons distributing these bibles are distributing nothing else (food, water) with them as well. It's possible, but highly unlikely.

If the persons receiving them don't want them they may be able to trade them for something of value. If the persons receiving them find some measure of comfort in the beyond hell they find themselves in - all the better.

3. They could have sent the cash to the Red Cross or Doctors w/out borders.
Or Tents or blankets or food or diapers or trash bags or even helped to rebuild
a Haitian church or school ....... :grr:

7. Considering that 80% are Roman Catholic
I guess that they feel that a Bible will offer comfort to those who are religious. If the Haitian survivors desired a Bible, who would provide one? The Red Cross or Doctors w/out borders!

12. I know several "religious" people of the fundamentalist variety who make
yearly trips to Haiti for "missionary" work.
They want to convert the evil catholics.

13. If 80% of the Haitians are Catholic I am sure there are plenty of bibles ...
Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 09:12 AM by Botany
.... in country already. I looked @ the group's web site and this looks to be a money
maker for them. Please donate to help Haiti and we will send audio bibles @ $157.00
per shot to them.

<$157 will provide one Haitian Creole Proclaimer®, allowing up to 300 people to hear the hope and comfort of God's Word.>
https://www.faithcomesbyhearing.com/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=53

Catholic Relief Services is already on the ground in Haiti helping and I am willing to bet they have bibles if anybody wants one
but as of now that $157.00 could buy lots of alcohol swabs to keep wounds clean so a person might live,

$157.00 a shot :grr:

157 x 600 = $94,200.00 I wonder how many long term shelters could have been built
w/ that much money.

22. You mean this isn't a joke?
These evangelical types never cease to amaze me. They always seem to assume that poor, illiterate people are heathens. Never mind that these very poor, illiterate people are almost all Christians already. It was the same with the fall of the Soviet Union. They all rushed in there to convert all those "atheist, commie Russians", unaware of the fact that most Russians are Orthodox Christians, who still managed to practice their faith, regardless of government restrictions. Maybe they should keep those solar-powered Buy-bulls, and convert them into a social studies course for themselves. They are the ones who are illiterate--culturally.

Yeah I'm sure Jesus would approve...NOT.. stop wasting money and time on crap and provide these people with food, water, clothing and shelter. I don't think Jesus mentions any "solar powered Bibles" in Matthew 25:35-45.
