The Old South attitudes survive and have metastasized!!!
Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 10:50 AM by samplegirl
SC Lt. Gov: The Needy Are Like Stray Animals That Breed And Don’t Think Beyond That Maybe it’s a good thing that Mark Sanford didn’t resign as governor of South Carolina. Andre Bauer, the state’s second-in-command, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor, says giving the needy government assistance is “like feeding stray animals.” You know, like non-sentient beings who don’t know anything beyond eating and reproducing. (h/t Think Progress)

“My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that. And so what you’ve got to do is you’ve got to curtail that type of behavior. They don’t know any better,” Bauer said.

8. I'm thinking she probably did, but
instead of real chocolate chips, she used little chopped up pieces of Ex Lax, and then laughed her ass off when the grandkids shit their brains out when they got home.

4. So we should let needy people go off and die of starvation like a stray
dog?

You know darn well that stray dog you don't feed will die. You imagine it will hunt down rats and squirrels, avoid highways and cars, not be torn apart by predators and find shelter in some dank cave. But we all know the truth, if you don't rescue that dog, it will die.

I once took in a beautiful red tic hound. She was starving to death. She was so skinny, I waited until she gained some weight to take her to the vet because I was afraid the inoculations might kill her. She was just too weak for medical attention. She survived is now a beautiful animal.

She was trained to hunt. The vet thought she was trained to hunt bear and I saw her tree a baby bear once. She is fearless and I've had to break of the habit of attacking the neighbors full grown cattle. Yet, when she became a stray, she could not hunt enough food to keep herself alive.

So, we know the most likely results if we turn away a stray. It will starve to death.

Needy people may be brave spirited like my hound. They may have taken on more than they could handel because they believed in the promise of the American dream. But like my hound, people can not be allowed to starve to death in a country so full of wealth. How can we justify that? How can a true Christian allow it?

6. Here' a link:
http://www.thesunnews.com/politics/story/1276344.html?storylink=mirelated

And a few more pearls of wisdom:

Bauer's remarks came during a speech in which he said government should take away assistance if those receiving help didn't pass drug tests or attend parent-teacher conferences or PTA meetings if their children were receiving free and reduced-price lunches.

- snip -

Later in his speech, he said, "I can show you a bar graph where free and reduced lunch has the worst test scores in the state of South Carolina," adding, "You show me the school that has the highest free and reduced lunch and I'll show you the worst test scores, folks. It's there, period. So how do you fix it? Well you say, 'Look, if you receive goods or services from the government then you owe something back.'"

On the lighter side - so it's not the students who get low test scores, it's the free and reduced lunches...we need to do something about those underachieving bits of mystery meat.

7. You do realize that not everyone in the South, old or otherwise, thinks this way, don't you?
And, there are plenty of bigots in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast.

This guy is an elitist, not a Southerner. He's the sort of guy who brainwashed the lower and middle class in the South who could not have owned slaves to fight for states' rights.

11. But, hey! He's "right to life"!!!!
from his website:

Lt. Governor André Bauer has always supported and will continue to support anti-abortion legislation. He believes every child deserves the chance to explore the world we live in and experience God's creations.

13. Except stray dogs. Bauer wants to kill stray dogs. His opponent should run on this.

Stray dogs have higher popular support in SC than poor African Americans on welfare. By tying the two together, Bauer has generated support that will rub off on working class disdain for the underclass.

12. "The Old South...." ????
Please take this back! I am so sick and tired of a great number of NAWTHERN DUers' idiotic attacks on the South. This says a LOT about you more than it does to The South.

I came from a long line of Southerners. My grandmother wasn't like that! In fact she loved animals, loved people, used to help those in need.

18. The comments of South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer...
are in the same mold as the carefully crafted remarks of Pat Robertson regarding the Haitian earthquake. Robertson asserted that the Haitians had made a pact with the devil and the earthquake was God’s punishment. Bauer compared children who receive free and reduced-price lunches to stray dogs and implied that feeding them only encourages their parents to “breed.” In both cases, what we find is a meticulously calculated rhetorical strategy specifically designed to cast the poor as “undeserving.
