An Update on The Magistrate.
The Magistrate is healing "on schedule," according to the wonderful nurses who have cared for him these past few days. Yesterday the last of the many tubes were removed and he was transferred from ICU to the post-op ward. He also ate his first real meal - at least, as close to one as they give guys in his condition, and as much of it as he had the appetite to eat. A release date hasn't been discussed yet but we're all hoping he'll be home by midweek.

Words can't express how much it moved us all to read your outpouring of support. I printed out the thread - just the collapsed thread view, in itself many pages long - and brought it to Mag to read. It made him happy. I would say "very happy" but he doesn't have the energy to show that much emotion, heh. He says he's looking forward to coming back and posting his thanks to you all.

I'm off to print out some articles and stuff to add to the pile of books and newspapers he keeps on his bedstand. (If you want to point me to anything you think he'll enjoy, please post a link.) Things are kind of hectic so I'm not posting much, but know that I'm keeping you and yours in my thoughts with deepest gratitude for your kindness and caring.

24. Very good news. And just to throw out a recommendation,
the Phantom Tollbooth is an awfully good stuck in bed recovering book. Some (me, for example) say it's the best book ever, but even if it isn't, it's pretty close.

http://www.amazon.com/Phantom-Tollbooth-Norton-Juster/dp/0394820371

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom_Tollbooth

The Phantom Tollbooth is a children's adventure novel and a modern fairy tale published in 1961, written by Norton Juster and illustrated by Jules Feiffer. It tells the story of a bored young boy named Milo who unexpectedly receives a magic tollbooth one afternoon and, having nothing better to do, drives through. He finds himself in the Kingdom of Wisdom. There he accepts a quest to rescue the princesses of the kingdom, acquires two faithful companions, and has many adventures. The book is full of puns, and many events, like Milo's sudden jump to the Island of Conclusions, are the consequences of taking English language idioms literally.

Juster claims his father's fondness for puns and The Marx Brothers' movies were a major influence.<1> The Phantom Tollbooth was an "instant classic" when it was first published in 1961 and has never gone out of print since.<2> Critics have compared it to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland series of books in terms of classic appeal and importance.<2>

<edit>

Critics have acknowledged that the book is advanced for most children, who would not understand all the wordplay or the framing metaphor of how to achieve wisdom.<4><5> Writers like the reviewer in The New York Times have focused on the children and adults able to appreciate it; for them, it has “something wonderful for anybody old enough to relish the allegorical wisdom of Alice in Wonderland and the pointed whimsy of The Wizard of Oz".<6> It is now often acknowledged as a classic of children’s literature.<7>

28. Slightly small t-shirts are really helping me be comfortable in my bypass recovery.
My recovery has been pretty free of trouble. Once I figured out how to get in and out of my own bed with very little use of my arms things went well.

About the t-shirts...The worst thing about recovery for me started about 2-3 weeks in. It was the hair stubble growing back on my chest. It's a makes a very strange feeling when clothes or sheet/blankets move on it. Sort of like getting stroked with a prickly hair brush. I found myself walking hunched over to avoid. Then I put on an old t-shirt that is snug, but not tight, from my skinnier days that holds the hair down and prevents the feeling. Relief! I can exercise on the treadmill, go shopping, do chores around the house, etc. free of that irritating sensation.

The big things the hospital staff will tell you about. The little things that can still get to you, the hospital staff doesn't mention so much.

33. WooHoo. Thank you for taking the time to let us know. Perhaps The Magistrate
would enjoy these -

I'm Fine, Thank You

There is nothing the matter with me,
I'm as healthy as one can be!
I have arthritis in both my knees
And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze.
My pulse is weak, and my blood is thin,
But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in!

Arch supports I have for my feet,
Or I wouldn't be able to be on the street,
Sleep is denied me night after night,
But every morning I find I'm alright.
My memory is failing, my head in a spin,
But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in!

The moral of this as my tale I unfold--
That for you and me who are growing old,
It's better to say "I'm fine" with a grin,
Than to let folks know the shape we are in!

How do I know that my youth is all spent?
Well, my "get up and go" has got up and went.
But I really don't mind when I think with a grin,
Of all the grand places my "get up" has bin!

Old age is golden, I've heard it said
But, sometimes I wonder as I get into bed..
With my ears in the drawer, my teeth in a cup,
My eyes on the table until I wake up,
E're sleep overtakes me, I say to myself,
"Is there anything else I could lay on the shelf?"

When I was young my slippers were red,
I could kick my heels over my head.
When I was older my slippers were blue,
But I could still dance the whole night through.
Now I am old my slippers are black,
I walk to the store and puff my way back!

I get up each morning and dust off my wits,
And pick up the paper and read the "Obits",
If my name is missing, I know I'm not dead,
So, I have a good breakfast and go back to bed!!

Love to Dance

I heard about an older, widowed lady.
This energetic woman loved to dance
but underneath her rapture something shady
had sought the Doctor, such was circumstance.

"It isn't all that serious", she told him,
"but every time I dance with male friends,
if I should snuggle close to one, and hold him,
I break wind as my body twists and bends".

"It's not so bad - they're never ever smelly.
They don't make any noise that you can hear,
but I am so embarrassed. If my belly
is ailing, are there pills to ease my fear?"

The doctor said "I'll give you this prescription.
Two pills each night. Come back in ten more days".
He smiled at her and finished his transcription.
Days later she was back with anguished phrase -

"Doc. what was in those pills? The floor was clearing
last night because the sound was loud as hell!"
He answered "Great! The pills have fixed your hearing.
And now to just regain your sense of smell!"

by Brian Bell

How Am I You Ask?

How am I you ask? Well I must say
I'll be fine as soon as this pain goes away
I'll be fine when I lose a few hundred pounds
and my cough isn't really as bad as it sounds

The sight in my eye will return they say
as soon as this pain in my head goes away
I guess I'll be able to hear again
but the doctor can't really tell me when

My teeth are ok all the bad ones fell out
And I could be walking if it weren't for the gout
but other than that I really feel fine
if only they'd fix this curve in my spine

How am I you ask well I'll tell you real quick
I was fine till you asked me but now I feel sick

Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 04:13 PM by flyarm
they had a hard time eating after the tubes came out..they all say the same thing..everything tastes like "straw"..TO HELP THAT ..mix with apple sauce..or mango sauce...or flavored apple sauce..bring it into the hospital..also a little ice cream works wonders on the throat..or italian ice..(RITA's)..Mash potatoes a must..

Please send my kindest thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery For..SIR!!

88. So very happy to hear it!
I'm sure he is keeping the hospital staff busy, interested, and entertained.

If he is anything like my esteemed esposo (and I suspect he is) it will be most inimical to him to actually DO AS HE IS TOLD, but let him know that here on DU, we will all be most grateful if he will make that sacrifice.

We want him back, and the sooner, the better.

encouragingly,
Bright

I met him this Christmas, Discovery Channel was on with a Jesus "documentary", he was ranting on about how the legends of Jesus were forged for political reasons. A wonderful guy. Just like The Mag.
