How about if we get rid of both "Recommend" and "Unrecommend?"
Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 03:45 PM by Cyrano
Yeah, it's a radical idea. But if you're not radical in one way or another, you're on the wrong site.

Many posts are "Rec'd" because those who write them are always "Rec'd," (e.g. William Pitt and Nance Gregg, among others). And that's not a complaint. Their posts are usually outstanding and should be widely read.

On the other hand, the "Unrec'd" function, (it seems to me), contains a degree of maliciousness. And before you jump all over me, I'm not saying that anyone who "Unrec's" is malicious.

I guess this is just one more plea to DU to drop "Unrec'd." And perhaps also drop "Rec'd." How then to select/highlight outstanding posts? Beats me. Any suggestions?

1. OK by me.
I don't see the point of either, but if one goes the other should follow.

2. Good idea
Since we are allowed to kick without making a comment, that would take care of keeping the issue on the first or second page.

16. I really hadn't thought about that before, treestar. But you may
be onto something there. I hope that Skinner and moderators take notice.

5. They should can the 'unrec' because of all the wasted bandwidth.
So many posts are about the unrec, OPs and responses. Either complaining about it, or complaining about the complainers.

6. How about people cease the incessant WHINING about it?
Get up and walk over to your window right now. There's this whole "world" thingy out there.

11. We've both been on DU about the same amount of time and
our number of posts is similar. (Check our profiles.)

It seems to me that we both spend more time "looking out the window," or pursuing other interests, than we spend on DU.

And do you really find it necessary to use the word "whining" when you read a post with which you don't agree? There's a difference between expressing an opinion and whining.

10. How about we get people to obsess about something else?
Obsessing about getting progressive candidates to win Democratic primaries and then the election sounds like a good substitute.

14. And, how about if
we leave it up to the Admins to decide how they want to run DU? Fair enough? I would estimate that around 95% of the membership could give a rat's ass about recs and unrecs.

27. The kitty on the left looks jealous.
Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 05:57 PM by Cyrano
Can't have that. It looks like a little "love sharing" is needed here.

On edit: This is Cyrano, and that was not my post. I was reading, I left my computer on DU, and my "cat" friend made this post. I love cats, I may have been one in a past life, and I'd like to be one in some future life. However, I personally think the cat on the left is just admiring the love and is not feeling any jealousy.

I like to flip to the greatest page and to the top tens. So it seems do others. Some people appear to think voting on posts should only be a choice of 'yes', that viewpoint seems odd to me.

25. Being a relative newbie and mostly lurker
I have stayed out of this discussion.

I occasionally unrec when the thread is an intellectual or moral embarrassment for DU IMO.

I occasionally rec when the thread is quality and under the general radar again IMO.

I use the tool maybe 5% of the threads read.

Suggestion to the DU community is more transparency.

Usernames and relatively simple route to number and accurately posts reced or unreced by poster. The sheep and shills would be obvious.

I have never ignored a poster but this arrangement would facilitate rationality for all in such decisions.

26. There are a lot of middleschool popularity contest things at DU....
none of it helps get the country back on track.

In fact, it could be said to do the opposite.

But, people who dare express a negative opinion about unrec get warnings. That's how evenhanded it is.
