Shut up Peggy Noonan - This is NOT a center right country
Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 05:18 PM by Hawaii Hiker
ON MTP this morning, Miss high drama Peggy Noonan said twice that this is a center right country to which Chuck Todd, to no surprise stayed silent, but i was surprised E.J. Dione didn't challenge her either....There are 2 lies Rethugs/conservatives spew constantly & they get away with it:

1) This is a center right country....Bullshit...The entire Northeast is much more like center left...The coastal west is center left...The interior west may be more conservative & of course the south is, but overall this is not a center right country....Barack Obama would have never have been elected in a center right country...The demographics have changed in this country, & it benefits the Democrats...

2) The other lie that liberal judges and/or justices legislate from the bench, ie; are judicial activists.......This is bullshit X 1000.....After this weeks horrible SCOTUS decision in the Citizens United V. FEC case, i never want to hear judicial activism be applied to liberal leaning judges again.....5 conservatives on the Roberts court changed 100 years of settled law (so much for precedent) this week & gave corporations the same rights as individuals....And of course, let's never forget Bush V. Gore, where 5 conservatives for the first time in history stopped the count & awarded their hero the presidency.....

I guess conservatives live by that old adage that if you repeat something enough, people will believe its the truth, even if its the furthest thing from.....(how about the Al Gore internet lie, he never said he invented the internet, but many still believe that B.S.)...

even hearing her idiot voice. I check to see if both hands are on the table. I have expect her to be masturbating while she whinnies.

Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 12:26 PM by reformist
I think there is something inherently unfair about the very terms "right" and "left". Because of its other definitions, the word "right" is more appealing . More people would rather be right than wrong. And of course, more people are right-handed than left-handed. As a result, people probably respond positively to the idea of being politically "right". To be honest, it's probably best to avoid the terms right/left altogether in favor of other opposites like liberal/conservative, or progressive/traditional.

7. I was just lucky I was able to keep from throwing the remote through the screen.
The RW just keeps on spewing regardless of the facts. The more you say it, the more people will believe it. Just make a proclamation and keep repeating it. Unfortunately, that has been the MO around here for some, too. But, it has, definitely, been to strategy of the GOP for the past 3 decades. The bad news is, it has been working for them.

I'm glad you posted this, I was screaming at the television when she said that.

10. WTF is she doing on MTP anyway? What does she add to the debate?
Nothing.
She's a dried up old cow who is half in the bag most of the time.
I have to see her on Boring Joe and Mika every morning now I have to see her on MTP as well?
She's a fucking speech-writer for a guy that's been gone from the office for decades and dead for half of one!

If you are a Republican with even a little bit of name recognition you get on TV because as we all know, it's a LIBERAL MEDIA!

19. They've moved it center-right.
Any position that was left-wing thirty years ago is now demonized, to the point where many people would hang Jesus as a communist or socialist. Tea-bagging wingnuts now seem normal to the populace, as evidenced by Massachusetts. Aside from issues like health-care (that hit ordinary people in the pocketbook and MAKE them take notice), compare Americans with Europeans and tell me that this country isn't centre-right. Of course, that's because of people like Peggy Noonan and those she worked for...

28. +1
I'd say we were already a bit right of center, though, even before the arrival of the neocons--who have successfully moved us (or media coverage of us, which may come to the same thing) ever rightward.

We've fought for and made small gains on the civil rights front, but creeping corporatism has swamped our victories.

21. Senators Snow and Collins (Republicans) from the Northeast.
The center has moved to the right leaving Snow and Collins in the middle? To the center left? Nowhere? What was Republican years ago is now the center. Everything has shifted right. Do not care for Peggy either but some of what she says needs to be heard even though she appears so self satisfied that it is sickening to watch. Seeing the Northeast as center left does not, in my opinion, explain Senators Snow, Collins and the new Repub Massachusetts Senator.

24. The US was born out of a violent revolution against the established order.
Seems pretty left-wing to me, not the violence per se but the rejection of established hierarchy in favor of an egalitarian one.

29. Egalitarian
less you were poor, black, female, Native, Irish, Italian, unable to own land... Technically, many things were born out of violent revolution against the established order. That list includes the Nazi party and the Soviet Union, but I'm not so sure we'd like to be in that company. Revolutions come in all stripes.

30. Yes, true, and you forgot Catholic, Jewish and probably many other things
which we would find shockingly bigoted today. But nonetheless, to revolt against the established order in order to improve the status of the individual is in theory a very radical left-wing idea, at the core. The very notions of "left" and "right" reflect, on the one hand, promotion of change vs. promotion of the status quo. But your points are good to keep in mind. :)

27. Well, on the grand scale of political theory, it most certainly is
Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 04:26 PM by Cal Carpenter
regardless of what Noonan meant by her comment, it's true. There is no mainstream 'left wing' in this country. The most 'progressive' of the Democratic party are perhaps a shade left of center but the Dem party platform is center-right, particularly when it comes to the economic perspective.

We are so caught up in the left/right debate on social issues that we seem to forget that the structure of our government and economy are what really drives politics, and on that we as a nation are most certainly center-right. I know i am setting myself up to be flamed, so be it...
