Article on Little Green Footballs Flame War in NY Times Magazine. |

Very interesting article about the founder of LGR's and its rise and fall. This is an interesting read for all of us on DU: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/24/magazine/24Footballs-t.html?ref=magazineDo we have flame wars like this?

5. Fascinating article. You mean it's possible for |
|
people to be multi-dimensional? And change their minds without being total hypocrites? And it's not a great idea for anyone on either side of the political spectrum to yell "ism" every time they disagree?
Far out.

6. Oh, people change their place on the political spectrum all the time. |
|
Some are looking for "utopia." When they don't find it on one side they take a 180 degree turn to the other. Most dont, however. Most are not complete idealogues on one side.
I know I have not moderate many of my ideological side from the Vietnam War days. I was right on that war. I was right on civil rights. I was right on the rights of women. I was right on Iraq (wpms), I was right on the devastating effects of predatory capitalism on our middle class and our democracy.
I'm sick and tired of being RIGHT! It would be great if I were proved wrong, but that HASN'T HAPPENED!

and thank you for the post.
Do you remember the line from the movie "Broadcast News" when the news director says to Jane (Holly Hunter), "It must be nice to always believe you know better, to always think you're the smartest person in the room."
Jane (of course) replies, "No! It's awful!"
Which leads to my own personal favorite saying: "Would you rather be right or be happy?" These days I usually go for happy.

7. If he honestly has changed his views and no longer supports hatred against Muslims, that's great... |

But I don't know if it's that, or just that while he didn't have an issue with bigotry coming from the American Right, he had an issue when it came from European fascists. The bigotry itself is acceptable, it's who it's coming from that's the problem. I mean, asking a hate-site like Jihadwatch to publicly distance itself from a European fascist political party is kind of pathetic, considering the extreme levels of hatred and bigotry from the creatures at Jihadwatch or even LGF itself....
on edit: Not sure if we're allowed to link to LGF from here, but I just looked over there for the first time in what must be years, and Charles Johnston has posted a rebuttal to the article about him. And he makes a good point. While in the article they make out it's paranoid and weird for him to comment about what's said about him, why should he have to sit silently and not post rebuttals to things he sees as blatantly wrong? Much as I don't much like him or his site, he's got every right to do that and there's nothing weird about doing it.
