Can someone explain "The Family"
I read Sharlet's article in Rolling Stone years ago and have watched several interviews with him. One of these days I will read the book. For anyone who has:

1)I don't understand how their concept of Christianity is taken seriously. Is it not considered blasphemous? It comes across as absurd. I don't see how any member can truly believe in such nonsense.

2)I still don't understand how Sharlet got such access. Perhaps they thought they could win him over at first. But it doesn't make sense for an investigative reporter to get that much access.

Rachel Maddow has covered this extensively. If that's any help.

2. I've read the book...
because they are special, and God's chosen people, they do not have to abide by the same rules as the rest of us. In order to advance their cause they are given free rein...the end justifies the means. And, religion has nothing to do with it, other than serving as a useful tool.

Calvinism stresses the sovereignty or rule of God in all things — in salvation but also in all of life. (Jesus Plus Nothing)

5. NAZI named Vereide said he met the Good Lord who told him to bust longshoreman's chops.
The Almighty took the terrestrial form of the President of U.S. Steel Corp. -- I kid you not. Vereide went on to fuse "Ultraconservative Christianity" with Big Business and U.S. Government. An immigrant from Norway, the guy was a minister who started Goodwill Industries before the Depression in Seattle. The guy took off with the idea of God being on the side of the powerful to Washington, where he started what would become the "National Prayer Breakfasts" with Congressmen and Presidents and Lobbyists and everything.
