Post.

We're not.

As a country, we're not post racial. We're not even close. All we've done is shine the veneer.

As a body politic, we're not post partisan. We're not even close. All we've managed to do is peel back the camouflage. The height of post partisanship was Tip O'Neill's willingness to tip a few with a few from the other side of the aisle. Today, that aisle is a shark-infested moat.

1. We are so far beyond racial prejudice, as long as those

Of color are rich and very accomplished.

Chris Rock usually has some pretty funny things to say about this nation's "diversity."

2. I doubt we'll ever get there.

For starters, very few Americans even understand diversity. For 99% of Americans, diversity means "more African-Americans." They could care less if Asian-Americans, Native Americans, gays, women, Muslims are underrepresented. Not sure why is is true, but it is.

What is it about race in particular? We obsess about Congress and the Supreme Court "representing" the people (read: look like them), but we could care less that single moms, people with AIDS, etc. aren't represented. It seems that if I want someone to care about the issues I care about, the fact that they have AIDS like me, or are a single mother like me, would matter to me much more than that they have the same skin tone as me. Unfortunately for most Americans, they could care less; it's all about race.

Therein lies the shined veneer.

I am not at all displeased about the strides that have been made by America's minorities. Indeed, I am thrilled.

But we are not there until the prejudice is gone from people's hearts. I hear racial prejudice almost every day is the most subtle of ways. People have mostly learned to talked properly ..... for the most part. But that's all it is. Talk.

3. You and I may not live to see it, but

There is strong hope that this new generation will put racial (and sexual oriention-based) discrimination behind us.

As far as post-partisan goes, well...like I always say, "things have to get worse before they get better." Things are getting worse at an accelerating pace. The critical threshold is always just around the corner. This new generation is not as brainwashed against "communism" as in the past...demographics are a changin'...there may be hope before climate change or the Caldera does us in.
