Bring me the head of Leonardo!
Leonardo Da Vinci's remains to be exhumed amid Mona Lisa self-portrait mystery

Scientists hope to exhume the remains of Leonardo da Vinci so they can reconstruct his face to discover whether the Mona Lisa is a disguised self-portrait.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/art-news/7069335/Leonardo-Da-Vincis-remains-to-be-exhumed-amid-Mona-Lisa-self-portrait-mystery.html

Is this really necessary?

5. Pretty silly, IMHO. Can they not leave him alone?
He was a genius of the Renaissance. Why not leave it at that? Let us admire his sfumato, both in the Mona Lisa and other paintings? He didn't leave much in the way of art, but we have his notebooks, so why not stop at that?

This is getting ridiculous...

7. Yes, it's necessary.
Beats me why anyone would worry about it. Not the first nor last person to ever be exhumed in order to solve a mystery.

19. It might be interesting and I don't see the harm but it's certainly not "necessary"
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 09:49 PM by Maru Kitteh
by any stretch.

We want to ≠ necessary.

It isn't likely to "prove" anything, just fuel more speculation.

13. The opposition to this on here just amazes me.
However, you should all know this was argued about a couple of nights ago, and got tossed into the lounge.

I have no idea why. Maybe the mods didn't see it as anything important enough to bother with.

And it isn't.

14. This is pretty silly. Let the poor man rest in peace.
Old Leo is generally regarded as a pretty competent artist. I've looked at his self-portraits, I've looked at the Mona Lisa. Sorry I don't see the resemblance. If you don't believe Leonardo himself, how about his contemporary Raphael. Raphael portrayed Leonardo as Plato in the famous painting "School of Athens". Doesn't look a thing like Mona.

Personally I like the conspiracy theory that the version of the Mona Lisa hanging in the Lourve is a copy and the real one is locked in a bank vault in Montclair, New Jersey complete with a nifty story about how Marie Antoinette gave it to a guy named William Vernon, an ancestor of the present owners. Now wouldn't that be a blast.

And it's the scientists and historians from Italy’s National Committee for Cultural Heritage that have requested this.

..... personal to you?

You seem really bothered by it. I threw it out there as a foil to all the silliness over the New Orleans Watergatewannabe angst. I hope I didn't upset you too much.

Go sit over there for a few minutes. You'll feel better.
