I stopped by for an after-work beer at the Legion hall and started swapping war stories with a guy I hadn't seen there before. I used to be a grunt and he was G-4 (Logistics), and it turns out that we had overlapped time in VietNam. Things were going OK until I commented on what a cluster-fuck Iraq and now Afghanistan have turned out to be, and that I believe the troops should start rotating home ASAP. He got his back up and we went back and forth for a bit, but then he made a mistake. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for the supply and logistics guys. We needed them, but unless you have been in combat, don't tell an infantryman that "War is Hell", especially when you are using that to score points in an argument. My immediate response was "Yeah, but COMBAT is a mother-fucker. What do you know about that, REMF?" Probably a little harsh, but what the Hell, considering that the most danger he faced was the possibility that his dick might rot off after a night with a Saigon hooker, maybe he had it coming. Anyway, he split. If I see him again I'll buy him a beer and we'll restrict our conversation to how badly the Redskins suck.

on edit: REMF was gruntspeak for Rear Echelon Mother Fucker

1. Rear Area Mother Fucker
Remember we have a bunch of civies here.

You know what is funny? My hubby, a bubble head, wrong time, right place, probably faced more combat than this guy from what you say. And so did I.

And it is hell... I got a little taste... so did he, and that was quite enough for both of us.

5. something i've noticed about my Dad, a Tet Offensive combat vet,
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 10:23 PM by 8 track mind
is that he would never talk about it. It's only in recent time that he's started to open up about it. It's been my personal observation that people who openly brag about being in Viet Nam probably never saw a minuet of combat.

On edit: Thank you for your service :hi:
