Raped Teenager Receives 101 Lashes For Becoming Pregnant

A 16-year-old Bangladeshi girl was who raped 8 months ago was given 101 lashes as punishment for having conceived during the assault, Bangladesh's Daily Star reports. Meanwhile, the paper notes, the alleged rapist received no punishment.

The village elders who issued the fatwa against the girl also fined the girl's father and warned him that his family would be forced into isolation if they didn't pay.

According to the Telegraph, the girl was so ashamed that she did not lodge a complaint about her attack. Human rights activists say that she married quickly after the attack, but was divorced not long after when it was revealed she was pregnant. She told the Daily Star that the rapist had "spoiled" her life.

"I want justice," she said.

13. And it's not just a practice of "other" (more benighted) cultures.
Much the same sort of thing still goes on behind far too many closed doors in the West.

The nature of the "punishments" differs, but it's all about control. Patriarchal control of family and of community.

2. Who are we to force our Western beliefs on them?
After all, this involves women and therefore must be respected as an important part of the culture, instead of a fucking human rights abuse.

Village Arbitration
HC order to ensure security of rape victim

The High Court yesterday directed the Brahmanbaria district administration and the Kasba police to ensure security of a girl who was raped and also lashed in a tarditional arbitration, and produce her to the court at 10:30am on February 7.

The court also issued a rule upon the government to explain why it should not be directed to take legal action against the people involved in the incident of arbitration at Khargor village in Kasba on January 17.

10. A little late...don't you think?
I don't think the Court will have much influence on cultural or religious traditions that they have practiced for a thousand years.

11. She's already endured the 100 lashes. Easy for the high court to step in now.
In fact, they've even allowed for a couple weeks to elapse before she's taken into "protective custody" on February 7th. Wonder what she's enduring in her tribal village right now....

Hope she makes it until February 7th.....

8. Back in the Middle Ages, there was a medical theory
that held a woman could only get pregnant if she had enjoyed the act of sex. So, if you got pregnant from a rape, it meant that you had enjoyed it and therefore there was no rape. This situation sounds like the village elders were applying the same lousy theory.

12. Not just in the Middle Ages
Within the past few years, one of the forced birth nutbags noted that women couldn't get pregnant if it were really rape, so there was no point to allow abortion and emergency contraception in the case of rape.
