28. I give him a solid B
I gave Bush an F each of his 8 times.
Obama fell short on several points, but...
At least he could pronounce all the words, and he spoke more coherently, as our president should.

If we save a lot by bringing them home, then why is freezing spending so important. We're talking about a lot of money here.

97. Nope, he said August...
But he did specify "combat troops." He alluded to maintaining a presence there to help out the Iraqi government. Just my thought, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were to ask everybody to leave sooner rather than later...

I sympathize with your cold. My sinus infection is hanging on and I still can't hear out of my left ear. :pals:

Do you not know what a State of the Union is? It's not just to give a laundry list of what's happened. If you want, look at the Constitution: "He shall ... recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient"

What concerned me most was the exaultation of core conservative ideology. It is funny how when "one of our own" says it, people don't recognize it. Globalism, a new offshore drilling push, "no new taxes", cut domestic spending but don't touch military spending.... these are all

CORE FUCKING REPUBLICAN IDEAS, and the ones that got us here.

I LOVE Democratic Party values and yearn for Obama to actually fix on them instead....

It was good to see him come out harder, but I don't want a bulldog protecting my yard if he tears apart our own house in the process. I'll take substance over drama.

113. I am going to watch it again
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 12:05 AM by Go2Peace
Maybe I missed some promises. I saw a lot of pledges lacking specifics and a very few policy promises. And of the actual policy specifics were "no tax increases", offshore drilling, more pursuit of the libertarian global free trade ideas, coal and nuclear.

It did seem like he will roll out more money for alternative energy and small business grants and help with college costs. These are all values that we would have gotten even from someone like McCain.

Repealing DADT, that is not an idea that comes from the right, but it really is not something they are too concerned about as well, as long as Obama did not discuss Gay Marriage specifically, which *would* have been a Democratic Value. I just did not see much except a "positioning" speech.

But I was kind of upset with the lack of Democratic Party Policy points half way through. Honestly, I suppose I could have missed some promises, but I suspect I did not. I will watch it again.

No wonder there's so much cynicism out there.

No wonder there's so much disappointment.

I campaigned on the promise of change — change we can believe in, the slogan went. And right now, I know there are many Americans who aren't sure if they still believe we can change — or at least, that I can deliver it.

Yes, I teared up.

...he still didn't hesitate to call out both parties on their stalling and idiocy. If he can keep up that kind of pressure (and maybe a bit more) and keep his message out there to the public more consistently, we may just actually see some good change.

It usually happens with threads covering live events, as a courtesy to people with slower connections and to keep the threads readable. :hi:

Important threads get locked after about 150 replies and a new thread is started for those people who are on slow loading connection. It's pretty normal around here.l

118. Okay
But, as others above told you, these kinds of thread are locked so they won't get so large that they become impossible for people on dial-up to download. It's standard practice here on DU and not an idea that originated with me. Don't you want people on dial-up to be able to read these threads with relative ease?

120. This is just ridiculous. Locking a thread ruins it for everybody, including people on dial-up.

Locking threads makes them effectively worthless, and even worse than worthless, in a "negative time drain" sense. To illustrate what I mean... Last night I spent about 5 minutes responding to someone's comment on your first thread while listening to the SOTU, and when I attempted to post my comment, I found out that the thread was locked. Ten minutes later exactly the same thing happened on your second thread, as I wasted time and energy writing another comment that could not be posted. It was really annoying as hell, and that's why I was so pissed.

As for the "people on dial-up" excuse, it's just absurd. There are tons of threads with hundreds and even thousands of posts that don't get locked - such threads will simply take a little longer to load for people on dial-up, but at least they still will be able to participate in a thread. When you a lock a thread, you ruin it for everybody, including people on dial-up, because obviously they can no longer participate in it. What's the point in posting a thread for live discussion if you lock it 5 minutes later so people are not able to respond to it (even if they already wasted their time reading comments and composing responses)?? It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I didn't know this was a common practice on DU, I've never encoutered it before.

121. Sorry
But that's the way it's done for ****OFFICIAL**** threads on DU. If you want to blame me directly then go ahead but it's not going to change a practice that's been the standard for this board for as long as I've been here.

123. No problem, and sorry for overreacting last night.
It's not a big deal, I guess I just won't participate in ****OFFICIAL**** threads, if they get locked after 5 minutes.

Just out of curiousity, I wonder what % of DUers are on dial-up. BTW, DU loads extremely fast (compared to many other sites), so a slight delay in downloading a multi-hundred-post thread shouldn't take more than a few seconds (I used to be on dial-up for many years, so I know...) ... Just sayin'.

Anyway, I didn't mean to overreact on you. Peace. :hi:

124. I was on dial-up during the last two weeks
As well, I started on dial-up in 95' and surfed the web with it up until 2003.

From the perspective of a person on dial-up, a post that's over 100 responses can take anywhere from 30 seconds to freaking forever to load, depending on how many images are in the post and whether or not the site's image files are stored in my browser cache. While message boards tend to load more quickly than other image/script-heavy discussion platforms, a long thread is still a long thread. It's difficult to be part of the fast-pace discussion during a busy time.

125. "It's difficult to be part of the fast-pace discussion during a busy time."

And once a thread is locked, it makes it not just "difficult", but IMPOSSIBLE.

That's my entire point.

But I'm done arguing about this, it's really not that important.
