K & R if you think this SOTU is a great speech
I've often been disappointed by this president.

But this is a great speech. I've made my living from words at times, and I've written and helped write speeches, and IMO this is a BRILLIANT speech.

Now, I want to see actions to back it up.

But I do want to see President Obama succeed. We have too many crises to deal with to wait for another election for someone else's solutions.

And he needed a successful SOTU speech now. One to reach the American people and target such obstacles as the Party of No's obstructionism, and the Roberts Court's undermining of democracy.

Kudos to President Obama for a fine speech!

that is NOT impressive. But hey, the media will love it. Just listen.

70. That seemed like a planned strategy, didn't it?
Like, okay peeps no loud outbursts this time, but nobody clap and try not to laugh at his jokes. It was a lame attempt at intimidation and in showing opposition. Really lame. Like Cartman cheesy poofs lame :-)

49. Sorta. It was an appeal to the Right to grow the fuck up and do their jobs Obama's way.
Last night was about the November elections, trying to set the standard of behavior by which the Republicans will be judged. So, yes, it was a call to the Right, but it was a call to the Right to support a moderately progressive agenda: Climate Control and cap-&-trade legislation, a responsible wind down of the Bush wars, and at least get out of the way on some pretty modest health care reform.

good speech sure. Now we watch what he does.

With Obama, you have to watch what he does, not what he says.
I don't think he's learned his lessons on bipartisanship either. He will by the end, I'm sure.

I'm really curious if the Afghanistan withdrawal will happen.

And on your post 'apocalypsehow' you say anyone who doesnt like the speech, "is not a progressive or a democrat of any kind".

I'd say Obama is not a progressive, pretty safe, wouldn't you say? I think he's not even close to being a liberal or progressive. So I reject your statement.

52. Actually I thought the delivery was pretty awkward.
There were a few places you could tell the policy positions were his but his heart was not in it. There were other places he was speaking from the heart and had to correct the words to match what was preprepared (though why I don't know - I'd have left it out there but then I'm not POTUS) I thought it was one of the most awkwardly delivered speeches I've seen from him - yet still fabulous simply because he is just that kind of good at public speaking.

The message was on the spot. It won't win over the haters - the Americans who just can't get past prejudice of having a black guy in the white house - the one's who "want my country back". And I doubt it will touch those who've chosen to drink whatever swill their local conservative talk radio and email blast group splatters about.

If the Democrats go back to work and start getting things done then there's a chance the "malaise" might start to really swing.

53. Oh I think America knows Republicans ARE very small.
Regardless of what one hears on talk radio and propaganda TV - I'm of the firm opinion that the majority of Americans KNOW the Republicans don't give a shit about "joe six pack" or "joe the plumber" or anyone else. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Americans don't think the Democrats do either.

make much, much better speeches, fiery, dynamic speeches, much more moving heart-felt speeches....

However, in last night's speech I thought he said some very excellent things, that truly needed to be said, but as far as a "great" passionate speech....I thought it was a good speech....he's capable of much better....But it's getting all that he spoke & said, DONE, that's what really counts!

And when it comes down to it, he's a politician..... and a speech is only words and ALL politicians find ways, (excuses) to go back on their past words.

Let's hope, participate and work hard for change and the best!

here

Missed the one on repealing Bush's tax cut:

We will continue to go through the budget line by line to eliminate programs that we can't afford and don't work. We've already identified $20 billion in savings for next year. To help working families, we will extend our middle-class tax cuts. But at a time of record deficits, we will not continue tax cuts for oil companies, investment fund managers, and those making over $250,000 a year. We just can't afford it.

67. My biggest differences were with nuclear energy and "clean" coal as solutions, I also thought
his request for a more efficient form of health coverage to be somewhat disingenuous considering the best solution; Medicare for everyone was all but eliminated from the beginning, they never seriously listened to that.

Overall, I thought it was a great speech especially the ending when the President spoke of the American People's cynicism with the major institutions; while naming them and their corrosive effect on American Society.

I liked Obama's approach of pulling the nation together, as from a stylistic standpoint; I thought it was a great one; the perfect blend of critical elements, accepting responsibility, red meat, candor and reaching out.

Kicked and recommended.

Thanks for the thread, highplainsdem.
