Working my night job, haven't seen the SOTU speech yet. Writing from my phone, can't track all the post-speech threads, so I'm just going to track this one.
How did he do?

7. I think even his detractors are quite pleased. |
|
He called out Democrats who shouldn't "run for the hills" when we need them.
And Republicans who shouldn't put the next election over the next generation (that one might have been for all of 'em).
A little smack down to the SCOTUS, sitting right there.
And he brought up DADT to the surprise of many.
You'll want to catch the rerun, overall you won't be disappointed.

34. He did what he needed to do. He bought time. |
|
He told us what he's done, and that it takes time to clean up the eight year mess he inherited. He pointed fingers at the bush administration, the blue dogs and the repukes. He made everyone responsible and said enough fucking around. The last 5 minutes, you could hear his hands hitting the podium. He put it in the historical context. Very well done.

Not his greatest speech by far. Tried to put too much into it (as most presidents do).
Plays well here on DU, but I am afraid not so well in middle America. He needed to give the average folks who got him elected some reassurance he has heard their message.
Probably gets a week bounce in the tracking polls and then back to where he has been for a couple of months now.
Question is - what can he actually get accomplished now. The weak kneeded dems are running for the hills. Repukes are going to support him on ANYTHING.
If the repukes make major gains in Nov, he is a lame duck I am afraid. We lost our window when Brown got elected.

50. Good parts and not so good parts |
|
Good parts were taking SCOTUS to task for their corporations are people (you know what i mean) ruling last week, and saying that congress and he needed to pass legislation to deal with that. Another good part was taking both the Dems and the Repubs to task for their bipartisinshipness.
Not so good were parts that sounded republican, taxes, and business stuff. Also not so good were the qualifying bits like "all combat troops out of Iraq by Aug 2010, leading a not observant person to think "all out of Iraq by Aug 2010".
Pres Obama talked over the applause several times, was booed and applauded.
He is an excellent speaker, and put his heart and soul into what he was saying.
