his race. I apologize for being cynical, but it's very sad to me that any of us, openly or secretly, assume that less than 100 percent white means inability to lead, that it's somehow surprising that person less white than 100 percent can lift us up or impress us in any way.

I'm not going to beat Chris Matthews up about this, though. He was accidentally honest, albeit ignorant and revealing more of his own mindset than he likely intended. We all know that there are millions more people who are not so honest (accidentally or otherwise) and, even if they were, they have no platform beyond coffee shops, around the dinner table and the anonymity of the Internet from which to broadcast such a "backhanded compliment" (as we called it where I grew up).
