Chavez forgives Haiti's debt

President Hugo Chavez on Monday said that Petrocaribe, Venezuela's cut-rate regional energy alliance, will forgive quake-stricken Haiti's debt.
Haiti's debt with Venezuela is US$295 million, about one-third of its global foreign debt of US$1 billion, according to International Monetary Fund figures.
"Haiti has no debt with Venezuela - on the contrary, it is Venezuela that has a historic debt with Haiti," Chavez said as he made the announcement.
Chavez was referring to the support that Haiti - which obtained its independence from France in 1804 - gave Venezuelan independence leader Simon Bolivar in 1815 and 1816 in his quest to free his country from Spanish colonial rule...

3. I think that was Rush or one of his fellow airheads.
He said Cuba and Ven didn't send anything which is of course not true. Cuba was already there with a medical mission and opened the first couple of field hospitals.

4. Great galloping socialism!
Let a thousand haters post.

The bottom line is that doing this sort of thing does more for a country than all the armaments, soldiers fightin' for freedom, and bombs dropped on wedding parties can ever do. The Nitwit Brigade will be out momentarily to denounce Chavez as indulging in cheap theatrics to score political points. Haiti's government, with a little more financial room to maneuver, won't care. It is indeed "our turn"; if the theatrics are so cheap, why not forgive Haiti's debt?

notice in the speech last night that some countries were praised - the only two in this hemisphere were Panama and Columbia. Columbia? And all we have heard from Sec. Clinton, Obama, and other State Dept officials about Venezuela (and Bolivia) is threats and criticism. I've never heard one postitive comment. And the reason is - the corporations are unhappy because the people down there aren't listening to the hit men and the people the hit men work for keep trying regime change.

So watch and see if there is ANY positive comments coming from the administration soon or eventually about this act by Venezuela.
