Deputy Reunited With Sea Lion He Saved

SAUSALITO, Calif. (CBS13) ― The police officer who helped save a wounded sea lion was reunited on Wednesday with the animal who has now been named after him.

Sergeant Mike Nevis -- the 6'1", 250 pound Yolo County deputy -- met the other Sergeant Nevis -- a 7'2", 550 pound sea lion -- for the first time since he rescued the sea lion that had been shot in the head.

The deputy took one look at the sea lion's bullet-riddled face two months ago and spent three hours at his side while waiting for experts from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito to arrive and take the animal to safety.

"He looks so much better than he did the first time we brought him in here," Deputy Nevis said. "He looks like me on the beach in the summertime… I just lay around."

The sea lion earned his name from the man who stayed with him, and the deputy says he considers the name an honor, but the name caused some confusion for people who knew him.

"A lot of news media said 'Sgt. Nevis is in critical condition,' so obviously my family and friends are going, 'What happened to him?'" the deputy laughed.

Two months later, Sgt. Nevis is eating and recovering from the bullet wound in his head.

I'm still reeling from a story of horrendous animal cruelty posted last night. 'Can hardly stand to leave my doggy girl's side...

Here's hoping for a happy life to that sea lion--tragically, it can no longer be in the wild. Sometimes I wish we could convey to the animal kingdom that homo sapiens are not ALL raging assholes.
