'Devout Christian' wants California's Mt. Diablo renamed Mt. Reagan
Source: Contra Costa Times

Still upset over the devilish connotations of Mount Diablo, an Oakley man has yet again petitioned a federal agency to rename Contra Costa's signature peak. This time he wants to rename the 3,849-foot-high mountain after the 40th president of the United States — Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Arthur Mijares officially proposed Mount Reagan to the United States Board on Geographic Names last summer, and the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors legislative committee will be briefed on their options at the committee's Monday meeting. The federal agency gave the supervisors until March 31 to submit an opinion.

Although fighting an uphill battle, the devout Christian Mijares believes the word "Diablo," which is Spanish for "devil," is "derogatory and profane," according to the federal board report. In 2005, Mijares attempted to change the name to Mount Reagan, but the board, citing its Commemorative Naming Policy, told him the late president needed to be dead for at least five years before receiving any such honor. The former California governor died June 5, 2005. Mijares, an Oakley resident, argued that the devil, or "diablo," was a "living person" so that name should also be prohibited.

Mijares eventually settled on three alternative options: Mount Yahweh, Mount Miwok or Mount Ohlone. The federal board eventually denied all three options, citing the negative recommendations from the supervisors and other agencies, many with Mount Diablo in their names.

48. There were a lot of names. Mt. Volvon would probably be the fairest.
Diablo actually existed within the territory of the Volvon tribe, and its original name was literally "Mountain of the Volvon". Sadly, the Volvon language is extinct, so we don't actually know how it was pronounced in their own dialect (the Volvon were a subgroup of the Bay Miwok, and when the Spanish destroyed their villages, they either moved into other Miwok tribes and adopted their languages, or simply learned Spanish).

The problem with Diablo is that it's a VERY tall peak that sticks up well above its surroundings, and is visible from well over 150 miles on an incredibly clear day. When the weather and sun are just right, you can actually see it from Yosemite (and vice-versa). Being so visible, it has dozens of names from dozens of tribes.

seem to have some difficulty defining the object(s) of their devotion. It's sometimes fun to point out to them that idolatry is prohibited; it's especially fun to do so while they're genuflecting on the mention of reagan's name.

They're amazing. They have this stew of ideas that are completely unrelated in any logical sense, but they're all in the same pot for these people for some reason. Things like apple pie, George Washington, and Moses. They revere the flag like it's a religious symbol. It's bizarre, and I think, speaks of a profound ignorance and subservience to authority.

Many of these people describe themselves as "God-fearing".
They MUST have some really paranoid crazy-ass god, if it's going to "get" them for ANY perceived reference to the opposition party. I'd be afraid too...:hide:

Reminds me of this Texas town...
http://unreasonablefaith.com/2009/06/18/texas-town-changes-greeting-to-heaven-o/

You greet people by saying "Heaven-o" rather than "Hell-o" because hell is bad and negative and heaven...well...isn't.

You can drive yourself nuts looking for stuff like this...sort of like trying to avoid the number thirteen.
The harder you look though, the more "#13"s you come up against until your entire life is wasted through trying to avoid ANYTHING that might have the slightest connection with #13.

Hmmm...anyone see any similarities?

I was going to say something like how 'the devil was in the details'...but that was just TOO easy...

The names Ronald, Wilson, and Reagan each have six letters. (Rev 13:18)
*
Reagan's post-presidency California ranch address number was 666 before Nancy had it changed to 668.
*
Reagan was shot and wounded and recovered from the wound. (Rev 13:3).
*
On election day of 1980, 666 was the winning lottery number in both New Jersey and Maryland.
*
In 1984 on the Saturday after his re-election 666 was again the winning lottery number in Maryland. It was sold out making it the number with the most winners until that point in time.
*
In his first speech as President Reagan mentioned the number 666 as the cost in dollars that was added to new cars by government regulations.
*
Reagan's first budget predicted 666 billion dollars in government revenues.
*
Reagan's re-election campaign cost 66.6 million dollars.
*
Reagan's first primary victory in the California Governors race came in 6/66
*
July 6, 1999 California votes to produce Reagan license plates in a 66 to 6 vote.
*
Reagan's first film was the 666th film released by Hollywood.
*
One anagram for Ronald Wilson Reagan is "Insane Anglo Warlord."
*
Another anagram for Ronald Wilson Reagan is "I ran old war on Angels."

The probability of all these things happening to a man who is not the antichrist is almost nil.
