I'm a registered Democrat who has only once voted for a Republican... when the Democratic candidate was Reagan-insider John Silber (running against -- and to the right of -- Rockefeller Republican Bill Weld).
I come from a family of Democrats.
But more important and more immutable to my identity is that I am a liberal.
I am a liberal in the sense that I think government has an important role to play in, among other things, redressing and limiting inhumane effects of a market-based economy.
I think the Democratic Party is making a huge mistake not to capitalize on the country's dramatic leftward shift shown in the 2006 and 2008 elections.
I think Democrats are making a huge mistake not to wear the "liberal" banner proudly, the way Republicans and Blue Dogs wear the "conservative" banner proudly.
I think the Democrats are making a huge mistake not seizing the moment of change -- a moment which I fervently hope has not passed -- to drive a stake through the Reagan Revolution and its greed-is-good mentality.
I think the Democratic Party has coasted far-too-long on "lesser of two evils."
I think the Democratic Party should make us, and itself, proud by embracing its liberal base.
Do you agree?

I eschew other labels. The word "Liberal" has a long history. Words like "Progressive" put me in mind of a person trying to hide from the liberal label. I understand others see it differently, and that's fine. I'm simply saying how *I* see it.

I think you have to be of a certain age, to really understand why some of us, ummmm not so much on the progressive label.. People who could not stand up to the heat the Liberals were taking.. But like Peter.. Denied us three times.. with a "no no no.. not a liberal.. call me "progressive" :)
Likewise I can understand those who are younger not having that attached to it so much.. but liberal I am and liberal I stay.

Both things changed. The two big parties have moved further and further to the right, and I moved more to the left.
My politics have always leaned left, and I've always proudly identified as a liberal.
But the more I see of what neo-conservatism and neo-liberalism are doing, the leftier I get.
