Blair offers justification for Iraq war

By DAVID STRINGER and JILL LAWLESS
The Associated Press
Friday, January 29, 2010; 9:18 AM

LONDON -- An unrepentant Tony Blair defended his decision to join the United States in attacking Iraq, arguing Friday before a panel investigating the war that the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks made the threat of weapons of mass destruction impossible to ignore.

The former British Prime Minister said that before Sept. 11 he thought "Saddam was a menace, that he was a threat, he was a monster, but we would have to try and make the best of it."

(9/11)The attacks on New York and Washington changed everything, he said.

"After that time, my view was you could not take risks with this issue at all," he said.

Blair embarrassment

It's all tumbling out now. Or should be. Tony Blair testified yesterday before the Iraq War inquiry panel. Mind you, the panel in on a truth-seeking mission. It isn't the last step before gaol or hanging.

***** But it could embarrass American and British officials who argued - wrongly - the war was justified because Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction and building ties with al-Qaida. Blair appeared somber as he began his scheduled six hours of testimony. He grew feistier as the day went on, gesturing, smiling and, at times, correcting what he saw as the flawed questions of panel members.

Irony jolt and reminder: Blair is now an official peacemaker in the Middle East, hired and paid by the UN, the EU, the US and Russia. Back in London for his appearance at the Iraq War inquiry, he ran into a lot of demonstrators. How could they be so rude?

1. My only consolation is that he didn't get
to be president of the EU.

2. The stubborn refusal to learn from error is a symptom of narcissitic personality disorder
Denial of reality and fabrication of events is a form of psychosis. Both conditions seem to be widespread within bubbles like the White House and 10 Downing Street.
