Edited on Fri Jan-29-10 11:16 AM by MineralMan
I can't find a good poll on this, and need some data. Please help by voting.

1. I thought splash screens went out a decade ago.

10. Oh, you'd be amazed how many business web sites open
with some big Flash animation, complete with loud techno synth music behind it. Amazed, I tell you!

Actually, I pretty much know the results of the poll, but I want some numbers to back that up.

2. I don't mind it if there is a readily-accessible 'close' or 'skip' button.
otherwise, it's aggravating.

9. No, not really. I'm just trying to get some data I can use
when the issue comes up. I know everyone hates that crap, and I can easily explain why. Some people want numbers, though.

4. Big No No in my mind
No website should show video or play audio upon landing, in my opinion. The ONLY possible exception to this might be musical artist sites, but even then, I like to have control. If I want to hit "play" I can do that. If not, I don't have to run screaming when attacked by unexpected sounds.

5. HATE BOTH THINGS!!!! And default should be simple version, not enhanced.
It's fine to offer both, but I really doubt that many people (other than the creators) care about the music or the rich graphics.

This is one of those things in which I feel web-designers have really misunderstood the audience.

They might dazzle clients, or even people in focus groups, but for the day-to-day surfer, I'll bet they result in fewer sales and lower interest in whatever they're trying to sell or deliver.

And if they must have these things, let people who want to use them select the enhanced view, let the simple fast-loading, low-bandwidth, version be the default.

6. Not only are they both annoying, they both can lock up
your browser. I know web designers and developers think flash is cute but it isn't, period!

13. Yup. I just hit the Backspace key the instant one of those things
starts up. It's faster than mousing to the Back button.

7. Web browsers should have an audio-block feature.
That by default, maintains blissful silence, unless you explicitly say that you want to hear sounds from this particular page.

8. I hate them so much I've disabled them in my browser.
Nothing tells me so much that a web site is going to suck as when the home page tells me to install Adobe Flash Player and not much else. Yes, I do have Flash installed, but I've only enabled it for sites that have proven value to me.

I NEVER let allow a web site play music or audio files without me first clicking on something.
