Yikes!!! Obama and Scott Brown related
BOSTON — It was bad enough that President Barack Obama lost his filibuster-proof margin in the U.S. Senate to a Republican. Now it turns out he also lost it to a relative.

Genealogists said Friday that the Democratic president and the newly elected senator from Massachusetts, Scott Brown, are 10th cousins.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society said Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, and Brown's mother, Judith Ann Rugg, both descend from Richard Singletary of Haverhill, Mass.

He died in 1687 at the unheard-of, for the time, age of 102.

3. I love the timing of this
Some keep trying to carve him out as "the other". It's nice to see that silliness dashed by facts. He's as American as the apple pie he likes so much.

7. Most of the US presidents and other high ranking people in US history were related
Everyone had some kind of link in their family to each other. Like some kind of far reaching royal bloodline or something.

14. You could extend that to a vast amount of the US population.
All living humans are something like 50th cousins, and when you talk about a specific population like the US it gets a lot closer. Particularly for the white population of the US, most of which has roots in New England, and which extends to their descendants like Obama.

12. Hello cousin!!
I have a brother-in-law who is my 9th cousin (and therefore a 9th cousin to his wife, my sister!). We have a common ancestor on my mother's and his mother's side from the 1600's. My sister, though she should know better, still cringes every time I say something about her marrying our cousin!!

15. Hey Cuz!
Deep down, we are all inbred cousins of a sort. You get back to those 9th and 10th generations.. how many great great grandparents is that...over a thousand.. and then start spreading it to the cousins.. you must be talking millions pretty easily.

Since we are all basically blood..you would think we would get along better :)

9. I am Hillary's 11th cousin, once removed
Although when you add up how many great-grandparents a person has with each preceding generation, that isn't as cool as it sounds (but I like to play it up, lol).

13. Do we have a birth certificate for Richard Singletary?
Edited on Fri Jan-29-10 02:08 PM by SpiralHawk
If so, it damn well better be the long form.

Hey, and what about Scott Brown? "Brown" is a very unAmerican sounding name. Where are his papers?

16. if you can afford it
join ancestry (dot) com. they have a "find famous relatives" options. it's pretty interesting--I'm related to the Queen of England, Mark Twain, several US presidents & their First Ladies (including the Bushes :puke: ), Booker T Washington (that one is a :wtf: because all my ancestors lived in the North),Governor Winthrop, St. Thomas More.....all except Thomas More (direct ancestor) are very distant cousins & the connections come from a few families who lived in England in the 1600s.

If your ancestors arrived in colonial to Revolutionary times, you are probably related to just about anyone else in the US whose ancestors arrived around the same time.
