Congrats! A friend of mine, an incredible artist, just got a job selling fabric and notions... she's happy as a clam too.
I know so many gifted, intelligent people with oodles of experience who would be more than happy to take that job too... it has to start somewhere.

Unsolicited, free advice (and worth every penny): As my momma used to say, "Wherever you are is where you're meant to be." At least for this assignment, be the goddam best low-paid temporary employee they've ever seen. You never know who's watching, but it's almost certain that someone is watching.

AND, it's wise of us all to keep an eye on these benefits and make sure they
are constantly reextended by the Dems --
It's not only protection for those unemployed -- it's protection for all LABOR --
including those still employed!!

During the 2001 Bush recession there was no extension approved until March 2002- and it was not retroactive. Republicans don't give a shit what happens to people.

46. Right . . . and they had been moving costs onto workers vs corporations . . . |
|
and not keeping the funds properly funded --
Bush made the GOP war on unemployment insurance much more obvious --
but it had been happening long before that.
AGAIN -- we all need to make sure that we pressure DEM Congress to properly renew
these benefits -- and I wonder when they last increased the amounts received???
The GOP knocked out a lot of the inflation guidelines -- it's all lies now.
DEMS have to restore what has been taken away!

My friend has been applying for a writing job and she is on her third interview for the same job. Today they called and asked her to come in and take an essay test. My guess is that they want to see if her portfolio is really hers. She was upset and felt that they were taking things too far. I told her that in today's world you jump the hoops happily to land anything that you can get. Good on you for getting a job!

28. About your friend...oh, please, if that's all they do to her, she's lucky. |
|
For almost every writing job I've ever had, I've had to take a writing and editing test, and that was in a good economy. The good news is that I can pass them with flying colors. She should suck it up and take the test.
The last job I was interviewed for was the first where they didn't even ask to see my writing samples! And I didn't get the offer!
As for the OP: Congrats...I think.

Thanks.
Many were canned so I was lucky. My wife has a medical insurance option so I am doubly fortunate and it will cover my two kids (one pre-Veterinary with two jobs the other taking classes and working).
I found my company were so hurried to lop workers they used a computer search operating on one parameter: Score between 0 to 10 on absolute need of employee for continued functioning of operations.

23. I've had temp jobs with no benefits that lead to a good job with benefits. |
|
I've always looked at temping like dating before marriage: I get to try out and employer to see if I like the job and the employer gets to see what kind of a worker I am before we make a permanent commitment. Years ago I was temping for Manpower and they sent me to a food warehouse even though I had no warehouse experience. The only requirement was "must work well with others". Two months later I was hired on full time, a union job with the Teamsters with a good wage and benefits. I worked there for 11 years.

I've been wondering though. Is this where the banks really wanted to take us? to the point of taking anything that pays anything in order to just survive?
Man, the America I remember wasn't like that.
What happened?

I was a salaried, award-winning, anthologized journalist with health care and paid vacation for 14 years. That's long gone. For 3 years now I've been living off a benefit-less, only-slightly-above minimum hourly-wage job...well, and a few freelancing checks and the dwindling remants of my old 401K.
And I am SO GLAD TO HAVE that job, because at least it's for a non-profit and I don't hate the people I work with. But it sucks to be 40 and making an hourly wage not much above what I pulled in at 20.

Take what you can get in this economy. My last two jobs were low paying assignments through a temp agency, but I took them because I could not afford to be picky, especially when no one was responding to the tons of resumes that I had been sending out. Best of luck to you.
