I got a call last night to call my urologist after a PSA Test |
|
I missed it. The message sounded ominous. "We need to talk to you, please give us a call" I got one a few years ago like it telling my wife and I that our son had a brain tumor.
All night last night and all day I imagined the worst. My wife and three kids without a Dad. I didn't tell my beloved wife about the call.
I didn't sleep well last night.
Today I went to see my Doc ready for some horrible news and found out his nurse was just trying to reach me to tell me the second PSA test in 2 weeks came back ok.
New lease on life.
I can't do this again.
Thank you big guy.......

6. My 88 year old father has been battling cancer for almost |
|
seven years - pretty successfully since the chemo drug he takes seems to keep it in remission. Before they found the original tumor, it had started to spread to his liver; they laser ablated the spots and keep an eye on everything with Cat scans every 6 months.
After his last scan, he got a phone call from his oncologist's office. The nurse told him his scan showed that the cancer had returned - to his liver and lungs. He was devastated; didn't know how to tell my mom, so he tried to hide it for the 10 days until his appointment (a recurrence of the cancer in a different place is almost certainly a death sentence, given his age). He finally told my brother, who drove him to the appointment.
When they got there and met with the doctor, my dad asked the doctor 'how long?' The doctor looked at him, mystified, and said - 'What are you talking about? Your scan looks great - no spots, no shadows.'
The nurse had called the wrong patient and - despite patient privacy laws, gave my father information that was not only not hers to give, but wrong to boot.
I was pleased to hear it hadn't come back, and very sad for the poor sod who was probably told he was cancer-free when he's not.
The nurse is looking for other employment.
I am very glad your news was good!

15. Glad your loved one is ok |

That feeling I had was just about as bad as the one I has with my son.
What raced through my mind was horrible.
Thanks for well wishes.

8. I NEVER give out lab results (with one exception) over the phone, good or bad. |
|
Occasionally it causes a neurotic client to panic needlessly. I don't, because after talking to the answering machine for 5 minutes and being cut off 3 times, the clients STILL need to get back to me to DISCUSS the results. So I always just say results are in, pls call me back.
I DO have my assistant call to report FeLV/FIV screening results for me if they are negative (they are 99%+ of the time) and it's ok for her to leave a phone message to that effect.

12. The newest trend is no PSA tests at all. |
|
A lot of doctors just don't do them, because:
-- the cure is worse than the disease -- many men have incipient prostate cancer anyway, and the vast majority of these men won't die of it

after 10 years of PSAs in the 1.9 - 2.4 range. (at 6 people start getting nervous)
Yup... doc found a nodule. Did a biopsy. Prostate cancer.
Very early, but....
PSA don't mean shit. Have the doc check yer ass. Twice if necessary.
