How do you convince someone to vote for a democrat |
|
When the only thing they care about is not paying taxes and they are in the highest tax brackets? Is there any point in talking politics with someone who doesn't care if their parents were thrown off social security and Medicare and get little income besides that?
How can you make someone care that people can't see a doctor when they don't care if people without money live or die?
This person always had to make it in their own and did cash jobs to supplement an earlier job doing yard cleaning and survived on ramen noodles eggs and Vienna sausage for years. Now he is doing well but has no sympathy for anybody because he never asked for nor got assistance even when he was unemployed.

14. No no. He wouldn't care if it never existed and they had pretty much nothing to |
|
Live on now.
He doesn't even feel sympathy for his own parents.

11. Can you find ways to point out Republican threats to his income? |
|
Talk about the growing power of multinational corporations and how they may squash someone like him.
Talk about the national debt and show him the chart that Joanne98 posted. Point out that economic problems can threaten his own wealth. Point out that a lack of decent jobs may cut into his customer base. Point out that a total economic collapse could even present physical dangers.
Point out that constantly increasing medical costs could eventually impact him.
Does he have a family? Ask him about his children's and grandchildren's future and what kind of country he wants them to live in.
Ask him if he isn't grateful for the opportunities that this great country gave him and if he isn't willing to give a little back to support the system that made his own wealth possible.
Suggest that the economic environment that enabled him to grow wealthy through hard work and sacrifice (which are good things) may cease to exist, or already has. The growing debt and growing power of corporations may make it much more difficult for others to follow his path.

12. I dunno. To me it looks like the real issue is that he's a dick. |

I suspect that if his self-centered assholishness was dealt with, the rest would fall into place. Realistically, I doubt you'll ever get to him unless you are his spouse and can work on him subtly on a daily basis. No arguments will ever trump his own life experience.

13. If money is the only thing he cares about ... |
|
... the best you could do is point out that his taxes go to valuable services that he would have to pay more for otherwise. It probably won't work.

More house to protect more assets to insure. He said he should pay the same taxes as someone who makes 10000 a year. Says bill gates should pay the same as him.
I told him that we probably couldn't afford our defense budget. He said to slash it then. Not even defense is sacred.
