Super Bowl Boycott
I don't know if there is any organized boycott of the Super Bowl afoot...but I sure would like to have one...to air the narrow minded Anti Arbortion ad and then turn around and deny the GLBT dating ad smacks of hipocracy at best and censorship at worst...I know the game is fun to watch but this is about the only way I know of how to stick it to CBS...so if you have any ideas let me know...thanks Mike C

1. This won't be popular, but I thought the ad was inappropriate
Hetero or GLBT - makes no matter to me. An ad featuring a makeout session of any kind for the sake of a makeout session just isn't appropriate for a family show, which the super bowl is. That goes for the sexist GoDaddy ads of years past as well. Wrong venue.

Besides, they are getting infinite more publicity over the banned ad than the ad would have ever generated - and they got their money back.

3. Thank gawd
That we have the likes of you to protect us from makeout sessions.

Wherever would we be without that protection?

yeah, sarcasm.

6. Sorry to interrupt
I don't think its appropriate for family shows.

Oh and before you jump, my best friend in the world is in Porn (Vivid and ZT mostly). I have nothing against it - just time and place.

26. Nope. I am not into watching other people.
But I have nothing against it for those who like it.

Time and place.

5. So the scantily-dressed cheerleaders hugging and line dancing is family appropriate televison?

YMMV

11. And what about the not so family friendly beer commercials?
Edited on Sat Jan-30-10 11:08 PM by liberal_at_heart
If they were really worried about sensibilities they wouldn't air the raunchy beer commercials, but you have to remember who their core audience is. Most of the people watching the super bowl not only are going to want to watch raunchy beer commercials but also pro-life commercials as well. Gay dating commercials wouldn't fit to who they are advertising to. Kind of funny that they would advertise both raunchy beer commercials and a pro-life commercial to the same demographic.

16. I agree but It all has to do with who their audience is
They are advertising to a specific demographic.

19. You're right, and you made a great point above about the beer/pro-life demographic
I would prefer, however, that CBS drop the pretense of being "family friendly" and just state for the record that they're targeting a certain demographic, and gay-friendly, choice-friendly, MoveOn.org-friendly advertisers need not apply.

28. Most of the people watching the Super Bowl don't give a shit about pro-life commercials
There are PLENTY of people with no interest in politics whatsoever. And they definitely don't care about abortion politics.

To them the most important Tebow question isn't "did his mom get advised to abort him?" but "can he play in an NFL offense?" (They also note that Heisman winners generally don't do well in the pros--especially Heisman-winning quarterbacks.)

You watch: in two years this man will be scouting for the Gators because no NFL team will have anything to do with him--not because he loves Jesus, but because NFL owners hate to lose ballgames.

18. Don't buy it- have seen many sexually suggestive ads over the years
and a number of memorable half-time shows... remember Janet Jackson...? I also remember a show with her brother in the 1990's when he grabbed his crotch 100+ times during the show.

Or, remember Prince?

21. Get a life, Maude Flanders.
I'm a parent. I have a young, impressionable child. I don't give a flying fuck if he sees adults kissing, because adults do that and it's reasonable, normal behavior.

I am hopeful Gloria Allred's having put them on notice that she is launching an FCC complaint and intends to sue, will make some last minute difference.

10. I'm boycotting because of the officiating.
The Seattle-Pittsburgh Super Bowl was the last straw. I'll never watch another.

As for commercials, it continues to amaze me that people give a flying fuck about them.

12. Here's a true fact about the Picksburgh Stillers:
They have never won a single game without the losing team (or a surrogate for that team) complaining that the officiating was rigged/blind/stupid/careless/half-assed/etc.

True fact.

Incidentally, it's not well known, but Pittsburgh only has to go eight yards to get a first down.

22. Wow. Not ONE game in 77 years? Those Rooneys must be powerful folk!
To have bought and paid for every official in every game for 77 years. That's absolutely incredible. Absolutely. Unbelievable even. Absolutely unbelievable.

The Rooneys bribe the officials with all the money that they don't spend on cheerleaders.

29. My point is that
in the playoffs, officiating gets progressively worse. By the time you get to the Super Bowl, you may as well not have zebras at all.

Pittsburgh was just an example, as they have been screwed too (the Polamalu call in the Colts game on the way to that Super Bowl), but the officiating in that Super Bowl was the worst I've seen in any NFL game in over 30 years of watching. When the NFL defended it, that stopped me from wanting to watch a Super Bowl ever again. Hell, I had a chance to see Giants-Pats live and turned it down.

that might be the strangest sentence i've ever read. reminds me of the lewis black bit, "if it wasn't for my horse, i never would have spent that year in college".

17. I'm glad my son is not into all the boy stuff
It seems that all things that have to do with men have to have half naked women cheering on the side lines. You would never catch me taking my 11 yr old son to a wrestling match. My husband wanted to take our son to a truck rally but just never made it. Later when we saw it on tv saw half naked women walking around cheering and advertising and selling merchandise. Football is the same way. It's like there is such a disrespect for women that these men can sit there and tell women to cover up and be modest women but at the same time they go out and cheer on these half naked cheerleaders. Is it just me or does the Dallas Cowboys cheerleading outfit get smaller every year? Pretty soon they are going to be out there in string bikinis.

30. only one of the football fans I know cares about cheerleaders
And we all think he's a little weird.

Six of the NFL teams don't even have them.

Skipping a football game because of an anti-choice ad starring Tim Teabag, I can understand. Skipping it because you don't like cheerleaders, not so much.
