It reminds me of Tarkovsky's open cathedral, looking one way from inside and a whole other way from above, like a prayer to the whole universe of nature.

which really puts things into perspective as far as building codes go. Rebar wouldn't have saved many houses but it might have given people inside them just enough time to get out.
Mother Rome should do the right thing, clear out the debris and create a memorial to the dead surrounded by the old walls of that cathedral.
Oh, right...
