3. They usually can't be shown in Canada, at least through the basic TV packages |
|
At least I've never seen them anywhere I've lived; they're replaced with local advertising.

5. I'm actually going to watch the ad |
|
before I decide if it's anti-woman or not.
While I'm pro-choice, I don't believe that everyone that chooses not to abort when faced with that choice is "anti-woman".

6. A woman who chooses not to abort.. |
|
..should never be considered "anti-woman".. It's HER choice, either way.. that's what PRO-CHOICE means..
A bunch of self-righteous, controlling assclowns who try to dictate to any and all women what they may or may not do inside the sanctity of their own bodies? THOSE people are in fact "anti-woman"..

We are dealing with Focus on the Family here. I very seriously doubt they are going to make it sound like either choice would have been okay.

15. That isn't the issue... She purports to having refused the abortion |
|
Edited on Sun Jan-31-10 06:27 PM by hlthe2b
despite her doctor suggesting to do so for her own health/survival... That "fact" appears quite in question, given the Philipines have outlawed abortion since 1930(six year jail penalty for both woman and doctor). So, Focus on the Family may well be planning a little highly deceptive (aka fraudulent) propaganda exploiting this woman and her football player son, in the process. Feminist lawyer Gloria Allred (who is not normally among my favorites) is challenging the facts of the case, if it does air as purported, in terms of FCC violations based on fraud.
Certainly pro-choice includes women who are personally anti-abortion and make that choice in their own life. I would suspect that a very high percentage of pro-choice men and women, may be personally anti-abortion.

16. Abortions take place in the Phillipines though illegal |
|
just like they took place here when they were illegal.
As for Gloria Allred, I think she's full of shit on this one. I don't see how it can be false advertising when nothing is being sold.

17. Of course illegal abortions occur. The point in question is |
|
the likelihood that the doctor would have arm-twisted her into having an abortion, given he/she would have faced at least six years in jail for doing so. That aspect of the story does not hold water.
While I too am not an Allred fan, here is what she is actually suggesting. Whether her threats are nothing more than a bluff or conversely have merit, she is getting some counter information out there. I do not think that to be necessarily bad.:
Allred sent a letter to Les Moonves, the President and CEO of the CBS Corporation, in which she threatened to sue the network for misleading advertising if the spot did not include the information that abortions are illegal in the Philippines. “This is not just another ad. Women’s lives are at stake. No woman should have to live in a country where abortion is illegal as it once was in the U.S. And was and is in the Philippines,” wrote Allred. “No sugar coated religiously inspired ad which fails to give all of the relevant facts should be permitted to air on CBS or anywhere else,” Allred added.
Allred hopes the controversial ad is never aired, saying that she expects that the “Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission will be watching it and evaluating it for misleading advertising too.”
“If this ad airs and fails to disclose that abortions were illegal at the time Ms. Tebow made her “choice”, then I intend to file a formal complaint of misleading advertising with those federal commissions.”

22. I think you're adding in assumptions |
|
that aren't necessarily valid. Arm twisting? Who said anything about arm twisting?
And if Gloria Allred is going to make her stand on whether or not the commercial states that abortions were illegal at the time, she's not as smart as she thinks she is. Has she ever heard of air travel? Does she believe that Pam Tebow was being held hostage in the PI? Of course, I haven't seen Allred's name in the paper for awhile, so I guess it was only to be expected that she would pop up like some macabre jack-in-the-box.
It is beyond my comprehension why people get so upset about a woman making a commercial saying that she chose not to have an abortion.

Edited on Sun Jan-31-10 07:21 PM by hlthe2b
Focus on the Family does not give a shit any more than the wacos of Fred Phelp's clan, whether they incite violence against abortion providers or recipients of these services. That is not so incomprehensible IMHO...

26. The killing of Dr. Tiller |
|
was carried out by a nutjob that was urged on by the likes of O'Reilly, Beck, et al.
To equate the hate that O'Reilly and Beck spew with a woman talking about her choice to not have an abortion is hyperbole at best and utter ignorance at worst.
And all this time I thought pro-choice meant just that - leave the choice to the woman.
And why the hysteria just because I don't agree with your POV?

31. No.. not at all. You appear to be relativel new to DU |
|
unless you lurked for sometime.
Disagreeing without calling out those you disagree with as being of "utter ignorance." One is civil debate. The other, not. I hope you stay around on DU, but personal attacks on those with whom you disagree will ultimately cause you problems or even get you banned. I'll just agree to disagree, wish you a good night and extend a belated welcome to DU.

uncomfortable, but I was not rude to you. I would encourage you to realize I don't want to see you get yourself banned. While I don't totally agree with you, I respect your opinion and can fathom how you might hold that opinion and I don't consider you to be ignorant for holding it. That is the difference.
I can assure you, having been here since 2001, I can and have "taken plenty." The difference is the rules are set up so that we can debate without having to take abusive attacks. Progressives may have a hard time agreeing on much of anything, but civil discourse, I think is one area of common ground.

is not like woman gain a lot respect from the commercials made by the marketing industry. Particularly the type of commercials that tend to dominate male sports on TV.

Beer, half naked women, and sports go hand in hand. I won't even watch the mixed martial arts anymore. I was actually pretty interested in MMA fighting when it first came to the US. I love martial arts. But then the people who market the wrestling began to market the MMA and it started to look just like the WWE. Martial artists trash talking and looking like they are on steroids and half naked women holding up signs so that all of us stupid people who can't count know what round they are in. I have to admit as much as I don't like Chuck Norris I liked his MMA league. He actually had female athletes competing as well as men. The men didn't look like they were on steroids, and there were no half naked women holding up signs telling us what round they were in.

(of NFL fame) on CNN, who though in his late 40s is incredibly buff and purportedly has the heart of a man in his 20s, per the piece. BUt the film clip looked like he was wrestling the guy then pummeling him for what seemed an interminable amount of time. It really looked horribly violent. Is this what it is? Pin your opponent and beat the hell out of them? That's the entire gist? May as well bring back the gladiators.

You know the ones depicting men as domestically challenged goons incapable of preparing their own meals or choosing the proper cologne without a woman's assistance.
Edited to add: That all football fans are men is a gross generalization, which like many gross generalizations is inaccurate. My g/f can rattle off sports stats rules & trivia that would make many men whimper in shame.
