Criminals in Haiti 'raping quake survivors and trafficking children'
Criminals in Haiti are preying on vulnerable earthquake survivors, even raping women, in makeshift camps set up in Port-au-Prince after the disaster.

"With the blackout that's befallen the Haitian capital, bandits are taking advantage to harass and rape women and young girls under the tents," Haiti’s police, chief Mario Andresol, said yesterday.

"We have more than 7,000 detainees in the streets who escaped from the national penitentiary the evening of the earthquake ... It took us five years to apprehend them. Today they are running wild." Rachelle Dolce, who is living at a large makeshift camp on the Petionville Club golf course, said that she thought a rape had occurred outside her tent the previous night. She said that she heard men making noise and a woman struggling.

"I heard a fight outside and I saw panties on the ground," she said. "I started to shout a lot and they left." Figures for the number of crimes were not available but women's organizations have already detailed a number of cases and alerted the United Nations mission in Haiti, Mr Andresol said.

2. NO this cant be happening - i was told by countless #'s of my fellow DU'ers (experts all) that this
would never happen - all we have to do is just start airdropping supplies en-mass and it will all work out.

(where is the big sarcasm button - its got to be here somewhere)

9. That was my reaction as well
Listening to Democracy Now's extensive coverage, in one interview after another with doctors and other aid workers, they were all emphatic that they hadn't seen anything of this sort going on, and that all they'd seen were people trying to help each other. Furthermore they expressed outrage at the MSM's attempt to portray Haitians as savages.

Makes me think of the post-Katrina stories of babies being raped at the Superdome. Seeing a pattern.

16. Exactly. As reported on Democracy Now, over 80% of the prisoners
that managed to survive the quake HAD NOT BEEN CHARGED WITH A CRIME. And many of them were political prisoners.

But, don't let that stand in the way of the "Haiti Gone Wild" narrative that the vultures need to swoop in and continue their carrion feed.

17. Way to totally misrepresent the article.
"We have more than 7,000 detainees in the streets who escaped from the national penitentiary the evening of the earthquake ... It took us five years to apprehend them. Today they are running wild."

Why the fuck do you think they were in a national penitentiary in the first place? The worst criminals in the entire country. It's not saying the general public has "descended into total bestiality". What do you think would happen in any city if all forms of security were suddenly gone and 7,000 of the nation's worst criminals were running free? Sheesh!

19. Why do YOU think they were in the penitentiary in the first place?

The Haitian government was corrupt as hell and the majority of those prisoners hadn't even been CHARGED.

3. It's a very serious problem, and one that doesn't negate the need for more supplies.
However some posters are already straining to make this fit their tire old memes.

12. I'm not the one claiming that any story talking about local Hatian gangs is Yellow Journalism.
Just because incidents like the one by the Idaho church idiots occur doesn't mean local criminal gangs isn't a problem. Some posters are just looking for a reason to bash the US having troops in Haiti.

18. Odin: this is what is happening as far as I can tell.
Edited on Mon Feb-01-10 12:17 AM by EFerrari
The more the idea is played up that Haitians have gone wild, the more excuse there is for moneyed interests to go in and rip them off yet again "for their own good".

I don't discount that bad things are happening. Bad things happen. But PaP is no more lawless than San Francisco on most nights. I'd take these reports that keep telling us how incapable Haitians are with a pillar of salt.

It's not about "only evil WASP people", it's about money. Imho.

as this article portrays.

sure because 1) different portraits by folks on the ground & 2) some knowledge of haiti from people who've lived there.

also extensive knowledge of US media's false portrayal of danger spots, gathered from my childhood.

i used to buy into every article about uncivilised foreigners doing bad things. i no longer do.
