41. This was potentially interesting;
"Some Phat-owners have reported receiving the errors while their console was offline, which is upsetting, to say the least".

More accessing w/o owner's knowledge or permission...

(But nobody could've predicted...)

50. You joke but for programmers there are Y2K10 & Y2K38 problems.
Edited on Mon Mar-01-10 11:16 AM by Statistical
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y2K#Year_2010_problem

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem
:)

The 2010 one isn't serious but the 2038 one potentially is. There are workarounds but the problem exists in billions of lines of old code some which is missing source code, or the inner workings are completely cryptic and forgotten. The 2038 problem is already showing up in financial systems (mortgage opened today will have a maturity date of 2040).

Doubt it will be as hyped as Y2K though.

Kinda fun stuff for programmers is the talk on how to avoid this in the future. 64bit computing opens a very simple solution.
A complete brute force solution is to simply store number of milliseconds before or since the epoch (a known fixed date). It gives accuracy down to the 1/1000th of a second and with a single number you can store any date forwards or backwards in time up to 300,000 years away. So if adopted universally we will avoid date problems until the year 302,010.

61. Actually, the time_t problem has the potential to be more serious than the Y2K bug
The problem has to do with how time is stored and handled on Unix-based systems, as well as on systems that utilize that method. As I understand the issue, the time_t function is one of the most fundamental components for calculating time, and as such is used not only by the OS as a whole, but also in embedded computers and some file formats.

I'm not trying to be alarmist, but there's isn't any easy way to fix this problem. Changing over to a 64-bit integer would break binary compatibility for many systems (including embedded computers) as well as software; changing to an unsigned 32-bit integer would break compatibility for software and systems that deal with dates prior to 1970. Although many 64-bit OSes and software already have the issue fixed, there are literally hundreds of millions of vulnerable systems still deployed, and (especially in the case of embedded computers) there is no guarantee that those will be fixed by 2038. In the case of embedded devices and computers, there's no guarantee that these will be replaced over the entire lifetime of the device in question. Additionally, the fact that time_t is used by some file formats means that the problem will still exist in some cases even when the system itself has been fixed to deal with the problem.

63. Yeah it is quite the problem.
The only good news is attrition will result in a lot of affected systems being scrapped in next 2 decades. There really is no one universal fix all solution.

My point about 64bit was simply for moving forward we could have a single binary universal date standard that handles all dates 300,000 years in the past to all date 300,000 years in the future with an accuracy of 1 milisecond.

So we as a species don't keep running into new date problems every couple decades or so.

6. PlayStation Network Goes Down; PS3 Titles Not Working (UPDATE)
If you’re trying to get onto PlayStation Network as of right now, sorry, it’s down. Many users of PSN have confirmed that the network is currently unavailable, with them receiving a 8001050F error message. That’s not all many more issues have appeared and many PlayStation Network users are less than thrilled, voicing their frustration on forums around the ‘net.

The date on your PSN clock has also apparently changed as well, to December 31st. The time has also been mixed up as well. This is probably due to the fact that there is no network access whatsoever. Users have also reported that games are not working, because trophy access is unresponsive. If you try to play a PS3 or PSN title, the game will give you this message:

Registration of the tropy information could not be completed.
The game will quit.
(8001050F)

Purchased PSN titles are not working as well, and some are reporting of copyright issues. Demos however, are working fine.

We’ll bring you more on this network error as soon as more news hits.

(UPDATE)
Sony has officially responded to the problems users are experiencing with PlayStation Network.

“We’re aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we’re looking into it. Stay tuned for updates.”

enough to bother discussing on DU's General Discussion forum. Entertainment, perhaps. If the game doesn't work, there may well be something to do that will have a positive impact on the world. Look into it.

A class to prepare for, maybe. Sending some emails to legislators, perhaps. Surely there's something to do to take your minds off this disaster of global proportions. Really...

I've been here long enough to see GD consumed, from time to time, with threads over shit like the Olive Garden or smoking bans in bars.

Perhaps some should self-examine why they're bent out of shape at one thread dealing with a widespread technical problem of a product they're presumably not interested in.

64. It sounds like there is a possibility of a massive recall...
From what I heard the problem is that the system has two clocks, one of which was improperly programmed to recognize 2010 as a leap year. They are hoping that once midnight rolls around the clock will switch over to March 1st and the problem will fix itself, but if that doesn't happen then it sounds like there is the possibility that everyone will have to send their systems in to be repaired.

There is from what I understand a simple way to fix the problem, all you need to do is reset the battery and everything will be back to working just fine. The problem with this however is that in order to reset your battery you have to open up the system and doing so voids your warranty. While the fix is not terribly difficult, when you have millions of systems effected and Sony would have to pay for a technician to open every one of them to reset the battery it would likely cost them hundreds of millions if not billions to fix the problem. I imagine that it is not a pleasant day at Sony headquarters and if the problem does not fix itself at midnight tonight then tomorrow will be even worse.
