Poll question: Posts of substance vs. One-liners
Do you feel DU of late has a larger or smaller percentage of either kind of post? And if so, to what do you attribute the growth?

7. Agree. Lots of other longer posts unreced into oblivion
Edited on Mon Mar-01-10 05:54 PM by unc70
One doesn't even have to be TSed to disappear. There are a number of posters I don't see being very active, and when they do post they are likely met by the unrec squad. It doesn't take that many unrecs to keep a post off the greatest page, not enough to have it show up on the "Tens" page. Just keep it off long enough to "age" off the first page of "Latest".

That technique for hiding something often includes posting something quickly that misframes the OP and hijacks the thread before others have a chance at posting. I sometimes see this happening so quickly that it is clear that those posting could not have read the OP, much less anything linked.

Once in a while, enough people get involved on one of these topics to overcome those unrecs and hijacks enough to have a "spirited discussion". Too often, those turn nasty with alerts all over the place. Great fun for everyone.

15. Yay! More stupid Unrec whining!
It's still on the GD page; people who rely on the Greatest Page to guide their discussion are dumb anyway.

21. In many cases, it is not even on GD because it gets locked for some reason
There are some very aggressive efforts to keep various topics out of discussion. The most obvious of these have been certain critiques of Obama that have been attacked with the vigor usually reserved for Holocaust deniers. Aggressive use of "Alert", sympathetic moderators, and hard-to-comprehend results go hand in hand.

Even posting this limited amount makes me look over my shoulder. Not a good feeling for somewhere I usually think of as a "home".

9. you mean like OMC? Or who?
I am trying to think of a liberal who was TSed and am coming up empty. Maybe Dem Bones Dem Bones, but she was not all that active in GD.

19. Seriously? None?
I could name at least 20 without refreshing my memory via Google, and more if I tried. There are entire forums that have sprung up populated by banned DUers of the Liberal variety. Of course the reasons for their banning are varied, but they certainly do exist, and in great numbers.

20. I mean in the last year
I remember one time searching archives and reading some great posts and when I checked on the profile, they were gone, but I cannot remember many of their names either.

8. One liners are to begin conversations, Long Posts are to explain and defend positions
That's how I see it.

13. I generally don't mind the one-liners
because some of them are genuinely funny. The ones that are supposed to be funny, I mean.

The ones that piss me off are the one (or even two) liners that come out as a nasty response to something that person doesn't agree with.

No defense...no real debate...just a plain old "fuck you" or "you idiot" or something similar.

Ooooh...such intelligence...such wit...

14. Yes, there is a big difference between debating the topic and attacking the poster.

18. And the other thing
People who assume they know what someone else is talking about and then make a judgment (and give a snarky reply) based on their own perceptions instead of what the real point actually was.

17. Obviously, there are more "Get to the point" posts here now, since we have new
standards and forces about how to appraise the posts.
