Air Force nuclear units fail inspection in Montana
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Air Force officials say two units responsible for the 150 nuclear missiles in Montana have failed recent inspections.

Military officials say there is no threat to the public and that the units at Malmstrom Air Force Base are still performing their missions while correcting the problems.

The 341st Missile Wing and 16th Munitions Squadron received "unsatisfactory" ratings in February from Air Force inspectors evaluating their ability to carry out their mission.

Neither Global Strike Command, which oversees the 341st Missile Wing, nor Air Force Materiel Command, which oversees the 16th Munitions Squadron, would detail the problems that were found in the nuclear surety inspections, citing security reasons.

Both units will be re-inspected within 90 days.

1. Not to take up for them
But I really wouldn't want to be running a nuclear missile wing or bomb wing these days. Ever since the widely-reported story of the Barksdale AFB crew that mistakenly transported a nuke across country hit, the USAF has been extremely hard nosed on its inspection process, and if your unit fails (even for something minor) the command usually gets fired.

The incident above wasn't about safety (danger was low), but it was about accountability. If the crews unknowingly load a nuke on an airplane, how else could they lose control of a nuke? It would have to be armed, etc, in order to actually function as a weapon but that wasn't the point.

Anyways, I feel for my friends who came under the newly-formed Global Strike Command (basically a re-incarnation of the old Strategic Air Command). They are hammering units over every little detail...but for good reason.

4. What does "failed inspection mean"? Deficient structural integrity?
Not proficient at safety drills?

5. Depends...
They could fail for anything from inadequate response to a simulated nuke incident, inadequate documentation...you name it. The nuke surety inspections are extremely nit-picky..
