Bunning Complicates Republican Strategy

Sen. Jim Bunning's (R-KY) "unilateral decision to block an extension of federally funded unemployment benefits and other popular provisions has united Democrats and sent Republicans hiding from the political backlash," Politico reports.

"Making matters worse for the GOP: Bunning is opposing the $10 billion aid package on the grounds that it isn't paid for -- effectively forcing his Republican colleagues to join him or risk undercutting their own efforts to make Democrats' deficit spending a centerpiece of their 2010 campaign."

3. I've been thinking that as well. Is this whole thing about
wasting time by obstructing the Dems' agenda, regardless of how many people are hurt by Bunning's actions? He's got nothing to lose (except all personal credibility, which I don't know if he had to begin with) because he's not running again.

5. The thing is, being obstructionist eventually backfires on you when you finally
oppose something people actually want. With unemployment benefits, Bunning and co failed to realize that the people out of work are people in the middle class that sometimes vote Republican. They are more likely to be really angry.

...medically as well as ethically..

One hopes his constituents don't forget who it was that stopped them from getting their UI benefits come election time..

2. Entirely possible. Who knows what those craven nitwits will be up to next?
Bunning is going out ugly, that's for sure.

The Pukes are running a very high risk letting him hold center stage.

Recommended.

4. I think he is just a wild man, and they are really trying to shut him up.
They asked him repeatedly not to run again for this term - he was billed as one of the 5 worst senators we have, and many people in his own party feel he is beyond mentally unstable.
Besides, I don't share the idea that the GOP is so wonderfully intelligent and cunning as to plan these double-reverse stunts to gain on the democrats - they show NO evidence of great intelligence at all.

9. Now there's a good frame; also, one more way to create more
homeless people by denying them UI benefits to keep their heads above water during this absolutely horrible economy.

THAT'S where we can make the cuts, Jim. Right there. Quick, easy. You hypocritical POS.

12. I Just Think It's A Way For Bunning To Get Back At The Regressive's (formerly Repug's).....
He's embarrassing them for their lack of support for him. He's doing this to make the Regressives look bad.

Jim Bunning voted NO on Pay-As-You-Go
by Mohner

Mon Mar 01, 2010 at 09:48:27 PM PST

In case there's anyone left who still had a doubt that the GOP is the "Party of No", Jim Bunning puts you straight -- it's all about the obstruction. Bunning voted NO on the Pay-as-you-Go bill.

Here is a List of the YEA/NAY votes for the Senate version of "Pay as you Go", the bill that would require the federal government to pay for future spending increases. To be "deficit neutral".

This vote was taken January 28, 2010. A little over a month ago.

You would think that a man as interested in paying for $10 Billion worth of spending on unemployment extensions and construction spending, as Jim Bunning apparently is, would jump at the chance to make sure that the federal government would pay its way going forward. Alas, you are giving WAY too much credit to the idea of rationality, a sense of shame, and general human decency. Jim Bunning voted NO on Pay-as-you-Go.

With a straight human face, and with the sheer human pain of missing a college basketball game, Jim Bunning declared that he would stop a $10 Billion stop-gap spending bill from going forward. And yet he voted against Pay-as-you-Go.

This should be the other shoe dropping. This isn't about deficits, or healthcare, or anything. It's about VOTING AGAINST WHATEVER the Obama Administration proposes, and to do anything at all to obstruct, wherever the GOP can.

Rachel Maddow said it best: They're not ashamed. They don't have that gene. They don't share the most basic sense of shame that even infants have.

17. # 1 trait of Republican lawmakers: Hypocrisy
Votes against pay/go but won't approve UI benefits cause it's not paid for. And the media, as usual, MIA on this.

18. Last couple of weeks there has been some good press for the Stimulus Bill
I think this is an attempt to drain as much of the remaining money as possible before it can do any more good (not that I think it's going to help enough, at this point). What they don't want is a lot of positive stories about jobs and programs the stimulus bill created going into November. If they can chip off more of the money for other purposes they can just keep screaming how Obama and the Democrats spent $787 billion and didn't create any jobs.
