Tulsa Restaurant Patrons Step Over Shooting Victim To Reach Pick-up Window

Tulsa Police say out of numerous potential witnesses, only one person had any information to offer in a shooting overnight Sunday at the Chicken Hut restaurant, 1500 E. Apache.

The shooting victim, 27-year-old Valentino Verner, later died of his wounds at a Tulsa hospital.

Restaurant patrons even shoved past emergency workers, stepping over the victim to get their food.

Tulsa Police, firefighters and ambulance personnel responded to a call of shots fired at the restaurant at about 3 a.m.

They say when they arrived at the Chicken Hut, they found Verner lying on the ground in front of the restaurant's pick-up window.

He had been shot multiple times, according to Tulsa Police Sergeant Mike Eckert.

They had a difficult time getting through the crowd to provide aid to the victim, and no one was trying to help the injured man, Eckert said. People were instead stepping over Verner to get to their food orders.

Eckert said customers even shoved past emergency personnel as they went to the take out window.

After questioning the crowd, they found only one person – a relative of the victim - who had any information about the shooting. That man could only say the suspect was a man in a blue jacket with a hood.

"Exactly one person chose to call 911 to advise us of the shooting," Eckert said. He added that there were more than 100 people in the parking lot when emergency personnel arrived.

1. OK, let's keep this in perspective: These are people who are standing in line
for chicken at three am on a Monday morning. Pretty sure most of them were impaired, either mentally or chemically.

2. Like most cities in the world, Tulsa has good parts and bad parts, good people and bad people
Generally the bad people live in the bad parts. (That's what makes the bad parts bad.)

I have family in Tulsa. They live in a clean, modest, middle-class, low-crime neighborhood.

17. Oh, not sporting! Not at all...

Years ago I lived in a neighborhood made up of homes and tenements left over from that city's railroad days. The place I lived was a six family tenement type dwelling with cockroaches that the landlord ignored until they became disgusting. Full of drunks who sat outside in the backyard drinking every day, morning till night.

That neighborhood was ALL white.

5. It was 3 am...
Most of the people @ that restaurant during the wee hours probably aren't exactly pillars of society, much less sober, IMO.

18. I guess some people don't think third shifters are pillars are society.
Then again they don't seem to think much of second shifters either.

As someone who used to be a 2nd shifter I see no reason why one should be assumed to be less than a pillar of society just because one has hours which would have you up and about at 3am.

16. so if you happen to be up at 3 a.m. wanting fast food, you are no good?

really?

it is not the time of night that is the problem. its that the people didn't give a care for the murdered young person.

9. Just a question. Why didn't the restaurant shut the pickup window
when there was a wounded guy blocking it? Besides the questions of greed that this brings up, it also makes me wonder where common sense has gone. When I was a bartender, I had a customer have a heart attack at the bar. I cleared the bar area and made the customers go to the seating area until the EMT's arrived. In the meantime the staff covered him with a blanket and held his hand until the medics arrived. Not a single drink or hamburger was served until they were done and the customer was loaded into an ambulance. Not a single customer complained although they had to sit without service for almost an hour.

15. The thin atmosphere atop a high horse tends to make DU'ers forget questions like that.
They're more likely to point fingers from up there and talk about how stoned or drunk the patrons might be.

I had the same type of experience in a bar, albeit from the other side of the counter. Someone in the bar collapsed, and ALL PATRONS were asked to wait outside until the Paramedics showed up and stabilized then transported the guy.

14. I take this with a grain of salt
I live in Kansas but for some godawful reason my local news comes out of Tulsa. I get ads from gun show operators saying that Obama is gonna git yer guns so it's time to load up...idiots in cowboy hats and Amurikan flags hawking cars...they're like second class Texans. The cops are all blonde crew-cut types and I can see them exaggerating this just a tiny bit. Or a lot.

22. OK, out of curiosity I plugged this location into
Google maps and the directions indicate that address is near a trendy, upscale neighborhood called Brookside. Tulsans can probably pinpoint it more correctly (its just off Peoria at 26th St., sounds like Brookside to me). That area gets 24-hour traffic and as far as I know, is frequented by every ethnic group Tulsa contains.

For what it's worth.

25. No, not Brookside
Chicken Hut is just east of Peoria on 26th st. North . A Brookside address would be 26th street South.
The Chicken Hut is not located in the best part of town to say the least :(

27. Two things I learned about Tulsa...
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 01:04 PM by onager
During biz trips there...

1. Tulsa is the home of the late Oral Roberts' various scams and ripoffs "ministries."

Tulsans don't seem to like Oral and his gang very much, at least the Tulsans I talked to. e.g., Jebus ordered Oral to build a huge hospital complex, when Tulsa already had plenty of first-class secular medical facilities. The Oral & Jesus Hospital was viewed as nothing more than a big vanity project for the Roberts family.

I was driving around with a local and we passed the giant "praying hands" statue that Oral built.

My guide said: "Those hands used to be open, palms-up. Then a quarter rolled by..."

2. Tulsa is also home to an amazing number of gentlemen's clubs strip joints.

33. Tulsa is also home to a couple of excellent art museums
The Gilcrease Museum of the Americas focuses on art of the American West and Native America art:

The Philbrook is one of the country's better small general art collections:

35. Just about any time during the day
They could have snapped the pics just about any time during the day, the attraction at 3am would be that the bars in the area all closed at 2 and that's the only place open in the area to get anything to eat. I've played every one of those bars at one time or another over the years and
I can tell ya, they can be some pretty rough crowds in those places out in that part of town.
