Arizona Senate kills texting-while-driving ban
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 06:57 PM by DesertFlower
Arizonans will not be banned from texting while driving, at least this year.

Proposed legislation that would have would have prohibited writing, reading or sending text messages
and e-mails while driving on a state highway died with an 11-11 vote by the Senate on Tuesday. The bill would not have prohibited talking on the phone while driving and would have allowed drivers to type a name or telephone number to make a call.

This is the second year in a row the effort to ban texting while driving has failed despite support from dozens of organizations, including cell phone company representatives. The Arizona Citizens Defense League opposed the measure.

2. Good grief. Texting while driving is nuts.
We require seat belts and air bags, but allow that insanity? What's the point of any safety measures if that's allowed?

7. The "texting-while-driving" lobby strikes again
If we could see the reasoning behind THIS, I'm sure there would be a BIG story to tell.

Who in God's name would vote AGAINST a PROVEN public safety issue?

13. What's needed are public service announcements- one of those things media deregulation rid the US of
Here's an example from Wales:

Warning- it's graphic and might be too intense for American sensibilities:

10. Guns in bars
are statistically safer than texters driving vehicles!

Although I have to admit, laws are worthless in this situation. I see the idiot texters all around me, and they drive worse than I do after a couple of beers down at the local watering hole.

The only answer: eliminate texting and instant messaging from handheld devices. That happens at the carrier level.
