along with being a curmudgeonly old fart. I almost wish they had forced him into a real read-from-the-phone-book filibuster instead of the weak threat of one with no guts behind it that passes for the real thing these days. Put some clips of that on the MSM, and perhaps ordinary Americans would finally begin to see what a venal and useless group it is that represents the opposition to meaningful improvement in their lives.
Ah, dream on...

10. Even though lots of people say Bunning has gone senile/nutz |
|
I believe he may have been the repukes' 'designated hitter,' assigned to filibuster in order to gain another year of reduced corporate taxes. Bunning is retiring anyway, and they're cocky about a repuke getting elected in his place. He's still an asshole, and he may be going senile, but I suspect he was encouraged by party leadership to stonewall this time around.

11. Bunning is dying anyway |
|
He has Alyheimers Disease and during his last campaign he hardly was able to campaign due to dementia. He should be removed for this reason alone.

Isn't there a way to remove a Senator when their illness is obviously flawing their performance?

18. Took some searching to find out what it was. |
|
(Actually, his amendment wasn't defeated; the vote was not consider his amendment--a defacto defeat, much like losing a cloture vote is a de facto defeat.)
He wanted to rescind a tax credit on black liquor, which is a byproduct of the paper manufacturing industry. It's been used for a long time as fuel, but when biofuel tax credits came along it was deemed to qualify for the tax credit. $24 billion, projected, over 10 years.
Oddly, the only reason I know about squat about black liquor is because that particular tax credit's come up in a few other discussions. Lots of people have projects that they want to get passed for which some sort of revenue stream is required cover. The $10 billion in additional deficit for this bill could be justified, but it couldn't be justified for their bills. So lots of other people have already called dibs on those funds. Sometimes the projects involve health care, sometimes not. (In fact, that $24 billion seems to pop up all over the place and probably accounts for at least $100 billion in collective deficit reductions.)
Then again, "deficits are good" seems to be a common rallying cry.
And, no, I'm not a Bunning supporter. But I also don't consider $1.4 trillion to be on par with $300 billion.
