So I completely shut a teabagger down on a campus bus...
She started griping about how bad the government was and how we just ought to throw everyone out. I said that I liked what we had now a whole lot better than what we'd had the previous 8 years. Then she said that there wasn't any bipartisanship.

I said, "I don't care about bipartisanship. You know why? Because the government was a complete failure when the Republicans were in charge. A complete failure. They failed to stop 9/11, they lied us into war, gave us $4 gas, and they took a wrecking ball to the economy. There wasn't a single thing they didn't screw up. I don't want bipartisanship with failure. You know what you get when you compromise with failure? Failure. You want to kick politicians out of office, you start with every single person with an (R) beside their name and you replace them with actual competent people who give a damn about someone besides the rich."

She was stunned. And there were quite a few nods all around.

17. The motion is seconded
His relentless drumming for bipartisanship is one of the handful of things that actually make me want to smack him upside the head and go "Haven't you been paying ATTENTION?!"

Now hey. I can understand working between the two parties, and really that's not the problem. The problem is that one of the parties is actively trying to sabotage the country's systems. I'm sorry, I can't respect any bunch of douchebags who want to sell public assets off for profit while reducing the government to nothing but the military.

30. I do realize that ...

PRESIDENT OBAMA has to present as seeking bipartisanship. Right? That's what national leaders do. That's what a majority of the American electorate say they want.

On the other hand, why can't our elected majority act as the majority, instead of a bunch of gun shy poll watchers. PRESIDENT OBAMA calls for bipartisanship and when the republicans do their best impression of a spoiled 2 year old, the Democratic majority says,"Screw it. Here's what you get."

It's called playing both ends against the middle.

BTW, Good Job at shutting that woman down.

4. You do realize that's an equally good argument FOR bipartisanship...
The argument could be made that what happened in those 8 years was a result of one party refusing to cooperate and steamrolling its agenda through.

Personally, I think we need some "steamrolling" by Dems to get things closer to equilibrium, but Democratic politicians are every bit as harmful as Republican politicians when allowed to forward their agendas unchecked.

to proceed with agendas unchecked, "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead", at the federal level?

However, the idea that such cooperation with a failed philosophy can only lead to failure is still there.

18. No, it's not actually
The problem wasn't that Republicans had the power, the problem was what they were using that power FOR.

"Democratic politicians are every bit as harmful as Republican politicians when allowed to forward their agendas unchecked."

Evidence, please.

R or D - because although you would have to kick out ALL R, there are quite a few D's that need to go.

13. No doubt

Funny how "government sucks" only rears its head when the Republicans have recently screwed the country into the ground, and conservatives are waiting until enough time has passed that maybe no one will notice that it was their guys, and not the Democrats now back in charge that caused the mess.

Then when a conservative's in office, it's right back to "Dissent equals disloyalty."

I can only conclude that this massively hypocrtical attitude marks the success of the "Culture war," dating back to the '60s and before. It doesn't matter how well liberal or Democratic policies *work* or how disastrous conservative policies turn out to be. Monied interests have learned that all you have to do is raise a little fear of immigrants, hippies, gays, racial minorities, other religions, etc. etc., and a certain segment will gladly follow them over any cliff they choose.

In other words, it's not what you do. It's who you ARE that matters. Look at Mitt beating the drum of "Never Apologize (for what Republicans did in the name of)America." It's an absolutely lethal irrationality and I wonder if we can ever outgrow it.
