Supreme Court Refuses to Stop Same-Sex Marriage Law

http://media.nbcwashington.com/images/410*273/81605020.jpg

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to block the District of Columbia's gay marriage law, freeing the city to issue its first marriage licenses to same-sex couples beginning Wednesday.

At least 50 couples were waiting in the hall outside the city's marriage bureau when it opened at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Cheering
erupted as the first couple signed in. And, of course, what's a Washington get-together without cupcakes?

Sinjoyla Townsend, 41, and her partner of 12 years, Angelisa Young, 47, claimed the first spot in line just after 6 a.m. Young said it's like waking up on Christmas morning.

Washington will be the sixth place in the nation where gay marriages can take place. Because of a mandatory waiting period,
however, couples won't actually be able to marry in the District until March 9. Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire and Vermont currently issue licenses to same-sex couples.

1. The enlightenment spreads.
Maybe I'm a sucker but this inspires hope in me that I may live to see the day where everyone really *is* equal in the eyes of the law of this country.

3. Oh no!
Think of all the Republicans whose marriages will now fall apart. They'll have no choice but to blame gay marriage for the break-up of their opposite marriage.

Heyyyyy, now they can blame teh gays!

4. I wonder when the catholic church is going to realize
that they can't scare us into discriminating against people by their sexual orientation.

6. Awesome! Makes me wonder...
...If SCOTUS declined to stop the DC gay marriage law, does this suggest they might be inclined to look favorably on the Boies/Olson case?

Obviously, refusing to block the pro-gay marriage law in DC is not the same as actively declaring all state/local anti-gay-marriage laws unconstitutional. But it seems like a positive sign.
