Help Homeless in Downtown LA- with one mouse click
I got this letter pleading for help by web clicks- and I immediately thought "this is totally up DU's alley!"

I think we could help this very worthy organization get over the top with a few clicks every day.

From the letter they are circulating:

From now until March 31, you have the power to vote for EDAR to receive $250,000. If we win, we will distribute a minimum of 500 EDAR units. That’s 500 people that are sleeping outdoors right now that need your help!

You don’t have to donate any money – all you have to do is click here and vote for EDAR today and every day until March 31. One more thing, if you can forward this email to your friends, post it on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, your blog or website, and wherever else you can best get the word out to everyone else, we would definitely appreciate it. There are even tools to help you repost once you vote.

Remember, you can vote everyday by visiting

1. You have to provide Pepsi with your email address to vote.

No thanks. I already get too much advertising email.

I'll send a check to the homeless shelter I support here in the Twin Cities. I think it's much more effective. I suggest others do the same in their own community. If Pepsi wants to donate, that's great, but not as a way to collect email addresses.

Here's an idea: Find out the cost of a 12-pack of Pepsi and donate that to a local shelter, and skip buying the soda.

3. I didn't unrec it, but I oppose it.
It's an email-gathering scheme from Pepsi. There are far better ways to assist the homeless than signing up for a Pepsi email ad campaign.

11. I can help the homeless by donating directly to organizations that
help them. I do that regularly. It's simple, direct, and actually is guaranteed to do some good.

Imagine. Pepsi will give them money , all to further their evil plan of making more people able to buy one some day.

4. One other thing:
One option for voting is to log into Facebook. Everyone does know that applications like this will go and fetch the information from your entire friend's list, right?

This is nothing but a marketing scheme. If the thing you're voting for doesn't win, Pepsi still has your information, and the organization you voted for has nothing.

Please support your local homeless shelter or organization directly. Do not participate in corporate data-collection scams.

21. good advice.
the point of this thread prior to all the scam talk was to help a deserving charity my company supports.

I wonder if the rwing wackos I work with encountered this resistance at THEIR websites.

I thought that the Homeless in Downtown LA might appreciate some help. Apparently, a persons email is too important to let a megacorp pass some bucks on to a worthy charity.

"Please sir, can you help?"
"get the fuck out of here you filth! You think I give my email to just anyone besides DU? I get absolutely no spam from anyone now. God forbid I get a coupon for a free Pepsi or one of those godawful pizzas!! I drink COKE, dammit!"

"I understand perfectly. If I had a computer, and a place to plug it in, and a roof to cover that place, I wouldn't ever want to use it to send worthy causes money in exchange for an email address. That somehow would really violate the natural order of things. Oh, it looks like rain. I better go find another piece of plastic down by the river."

"Damn right."

Justice triumphs.
